Man, these guys really like Mgla

In a little brother kind of way, evidently. They have a long ways to go if they're trying to compete at that level, because this sounds like b-side Mgla material at best. Their instrumental prowess is nowhere near that of Mgla, although the guitar work is impressive on its own, particularly with regards to the tonal shifts in melodies. It's just less dynamic in its execution.

I don't think it's bad, just that it reminds me immediately too much of a band whose sound is nearly identical, yet significantly enhanced in every way.

Darkside makes half the difference when you compare Mgla to any of their clones. The rest is atmosphere, lyrics, and riffs of course. This band is no different. Another average clone.
