I think I prefer this album to the first one actually... that one is hyped too much in my view.

Rating: 7 Another great album from Machine head, I like this album even more than the first unlike a lot of people I have spoken too.

Best songs for me are:

Ten ton hammer
Take my scars
The frontlines

although the songs struck a nerve and down to none are along stand out songs.

Rating: 10 This is my fave album by Machine Head. I love "Burn My Eyes", but the darker, more atmospheric nature of this album makes this the best thing MH have ever done in my opinion.

Rating: 7 Love the slow, doomy, heavy as hell intro to track 4 "Down to None". Don't really like the rest of the song though. Pretty decent follow-up to their landmark first album.

Rating: 8 Monstrously heavy and riffy. Some of their best songs come from this album. And I love that great mid-late 1990s sound - soooo huge!

My only gripe is Phil using "fuck" as a crutch for lazy lyric writing.

The sad thing is this is the last album of theirs I liked. That Nu-Metal daliance steered them too far off course and they never really got back to this sound.

As far as I know Rob wrote the lyrics and not Phil Demmel.

My impression is that he was, for some reason, thinking of Phil Anselmo

Same here. Even though this one is a tremendous step back from Burn My Eyes it is their last good one. Everything after The More Things Change varies from crap to mediocre. Yes The Blackening is mediocre. In intent The Blackening has a lot of good ideas, but what is clarly lacking is a producer that could trim the fat off the songs. The band produced it themselves and wanted to use every single thing. With the first two album they kept the songs short and to the point. (btw Exodus after Tempo suffers the same illness of too much fat on their songs)

Agreed on all points.

I think this is why I confused Robb with Phil (Anselmo) - both are self indulgent arseholes. At least Phil and the Down boys can churn out decent EPs consistently unlike the rudderless jack of all trade master of none that is Machine Head/

Somehow I have also mixed the two up in the past. Phil could only dream of playing guitar like Rob

But indeed MH are totally rudderless. Btw why Down is still good is due to the non-Phil people in that band writing music You should hear some of his death metal and black metal projects, those are totally shitfests extraordinaire, except for the black metal Eibon project but then again he didn't write a single note for that

I do think Robb is capable of good stuff. As you said, he needs a good producer to keep him focused. But the bloody computer revolution has made every man and his dog a "producer" and production is now confused with the music engineering side of it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. I remember when both Ashes of the Empire and the Blackening came out and I didn't enjoy them at all yet a lot of people were raving on about them.

Too true!

It's exactly why I referred to him as a self indulgent arsehole! Mind you I do respect him doing it on the level of a very commercially successful guy playing underground music. It's the equivalent of Axl Rose or Mick Mars or Lars Ulrich playing in Teutonic Thrash bands.

Lars Ulrich ...

Although he didn't play it I respect the guy for one thing though... his vehement love of everything NWOBHM no matter how obscure and pushing it like mad at the time when he broke big with Metallica.

Totally agree here too! Even that appearance on the Anvil doco showed the man loved the music.

Forgot about that, but indeed. And he even acknowledges the huge influences ANvil had on Metallica. Also as bonus material to the Lemmy docu.
