If you wonder "What do many of today's doom/death metal bands have in common?" just listen to My Dying Bride's "Turn Loose the Swans" and you'll see. I wonder who could have imagined that a band like My Dying Bride back in 1993 with the very promising debut album "As the Flower Withers" (1992) would evolve so much in their second album becoming one of the most important pioneers of a new-born genre of doom/death metal. I guess not many. They took both the sound of the band, and of the whole genre, many steps further. My Dying Bride made it happen releasing one of the most classic albums not only for the 90s doom/death metal but also for the overall doom metal scene giving alternative meaning to the word "doom" in the metal scene.

Black God's lyrics has taken from last lines of "Ah! the shepherd's mournful fate!" by William Hamilton:
Ah! the shepherd's mournful fate!
When doom'd to love, and doom'd to languish,
To bear the scornful fair one's hate,
Nor dare disclose his anguish.
Yet eager looks, and dying sighs,
My secret soul discover,
While rapture trembling thro' my eyes
Reveals how much I love her.
The tender glance; the redd'ning cheek,
O'erspread with rising blushes,
A thousand various ways they speak
A thousand various wishes.
For, oh! that form so heavenly fair,
Those languid eyes so sweetly smiling,
That artless blush, and modest air,
So artfully beguiling! [2]
Thy every look and every grace
So charms whene'er I view thee,
Till death o'ertake me in the chase
Still will my hopes pursue thee;
Then when my tedious hours are past
Be this last blessing given,
Low at thy feet to breathe my last,
And die in sight of heaven.

Pure genious indeed. I love the guitar sound
And yet you rated this only an 8?
Anyway, like Songs of Darkness, Words of Light, this is a definite masterpiece.

The Crown Of Sympathy is probably the best song in this album. I love the atmosphere it creates!
