Two years have passed since the Scumdogs of the Universe last terrorized the PMRC to the glee of most metalheads out there who enjoy some good old-school thrash. War Party was indeed an excellent album and proof that GWAR does after all have the musical chops that nobody ever would have thought of accusing them of having. Sadly, Beyond Hell is not quite as good as its predecessor - some glaring faults prevent it from being an engaging listen from beginning till the end.

There's a lot of concise songwriting in this album, where the song lengths aren't all scattered between half a minute or seven minutes, as in previous GWAr records. That said, the straightforward thrash approach unfortunately comes at a cost of sacrificing originality, despite the band's humour being well intact (check the opening lyrics for "The Ultimate Bohab" to see what I mean). My highlights would be "The Ultimate Bohab" and "the One who will not be Named".

This album has a special place in my heart. It was my very first CD. I have it signed by the band. I don't know how many times I've spun it.
