The best Doom Metal album of 2008

Australia's Virgin Black is one underrated band. After flooring the Gothic competition by releasing one masterpiece after the other, the band undertook a full-year of recording with a complete symphonic orchestra that gave birth to three albums under the project name "Requiem". While the first part of the trilogy Requiem - Mezzo Forte was a breathtaking album in their characteristic style, Requiem - Fortissimo deals with the dark side of their music.

Didn't this album win best doom metal in 2008? Strange it doesn't have the prize here as other albums do.
Anyway, great record. I'm listening to it right now.

Yeah, sometimes that happens, don't know why. It didn't deserve it if you ask me Don't misunderstand, I really like this album... but Mar De Grises was the clear winner imo.

Personally Six Waves of Woe was the best doom album for me that year, although I have no issue with MdG. This album, however... barely deserving of the praise it received. Although technically it didn't receive as much praise as it did last-minute blind fanboy hordes sweeping the polls after the band issued a call to arms.

I don't remember that much of it, just that it felt like a step down from the previous releases (which I consider extremely beautiful). But yeah... I have to check it out again since Forest Of Shadows is a pretty unique doom band indeed.

Hmmm, I really like this one. I hear way more doom than gothic when I listen to this album though, totally different from their earlier albums. A nice change in sound indeed.

And while I enjoy this album a lot, I feel it could've used one or two songs more, since it's rather short. The last 3 songs could've easily been combined to form one long song of 15+ minutes in my opinion, since Lacrimosa (Gather Me) and Forever really go well with Darkness in my opinion.
