Lurker Of Chalice, a name that should ring a bell for the Black metallers out there. Two completely unavailable demos, one hard-to-get full-length. A full-length that cost many Black metaller a dear buck until it was finally re-released by Southern Lord. In my opinion, Lurker Of Chalice's self-titled, début and at the same time also final album was one of the few albums on e-bay that actually deserved to be sold for more than thirty quid/bucks???. Why? Let me tell you why.

Rating: 10 To this day I still maintain my stand that if I was in the hospital and they gave me one hour to live.... I would blast this album.

It's not really because it's one of my favorite albums of all time... but because this is the only album that has managed to leave me completely empty after listening to it.
It drains your spirit. You just float... No happiness, no sadness, no fear of dying... Absolutely nothing. You are just ready.

EDIT: Yey for three 10s!

Hehehe, thanks for that. This album just gets me every time. Some of the samples are just...Damn. Specially the woman from "This Blood Falls As Mortal, Pt. 3" just packs a huge punch to the gut.
Before listening to this album I always had the idea that music HAD to evoke emotions otherwise it would be meaningless... But then I discovered this album and the realisation that music can also do the exact opposite, which could leave an impact just as strong if not stronger due to the extremely unique feeling of total emptiness. Just like lucas put it in his (brilliant) review:
Utterly free but also inescapably captured.

Sometimes I feel like I'm not... solid.

Apparently the lyrics are from a Sylvia Plath poem.

Yeah I know... and the voice is Gwyneth Paltrow's who was Sylvia in the biographical movie. I don't know if it's from an actual poem or just a quote but it's one of my favorite lines ever.

Meh, don't tell me that. That's the same as learning that the opening quote from Unlock The Shrine is from some crappy 80s police film.

I always had a crush on her. I love her bone structure* and voice. I don't find her THAT beautiful but definitely one of those women that give me the strongest soothing and calm vibes just by looking at her. It's weird.

* = that sounds way less creepy in my head.

I'd wait for May 2015... just go all "After a decade... STILL A MASTERPIECE" I've seen how staff pick for old album work if soemthing a bit relevant happens. XP The 10k comment is good enough for me though.

Don't get the hype, standard ambient black metal, near boring in a lot of places. Really dislike the vocal work as well.

Rating: 10 We aren't surprised because it comes from you. Also, I would LOVE to hear more of this standard ambient black metal because there's absolutely nothing standard about it. No offence (as I like his other works) but the fact that you prefer The Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide over Massive Conspiracy Against All Life is enough proof that the ones listening to standard ambient black metal isn't us.

It's probably because I listen to so much ambient by itself, that I find this just to be lackluster. Plus, I can't stress how much I hate the vocals. TTSLOS just feels so much more interesting and intriguing. idk, I'm just weird I guess.

I don't really get this one considering some of the people around here also listen to loads of ambient but sure, we'll leave it at that. I personally haven't heard a combination like this anywhere at all.

As Rod says listening to "x" amount of ambient is totally irrelevant because LoC isn't really ambient in any strong form, much like it isn't really black metal in any overt kind of way. Calling it "ambient black" is more of a convenience thing but when it comes down to it it doesn't really conform much to either (hence why people having trouble finding comparative bands). Even the typical concept of "ambient black metal" (like Velvet Cacoon etc.) doesn't fit the sound of LoC.

Perhaps "standard" was not a good describing word.

Regardless, like I said to rod, this doesn't click with me, but maybe I don't "get" it or whatever, it's just not that interesting to me. Perhaps I should listen once more.

!J.O.O.E.! - 01.07.2013 at 15:49
Rating: 10 Yeah the vocals are great. I think Wrest clearly has naturally rubbish vocals and he's done everything possible to disguise them here and made them as subtle and nuanced as can be by using various effects which work well in a clear, understated but quite unique manner.

All the best MSers worship at the LoC altar

Rating: 9 This Blood Falls As Mortal Part III gets me every time. Excellent album that really takes off with Minions and never loses its engrossing quality after that, in my opinion. That's not to say that the first few tracks are merely average-- they are very great. For some odd reason, I feel there's a gap between the first three tracks and the rest of the album, and I tend to skip the first few tracks as a result. Other than that, I can't really find many discernible flaws.
