Iron Maiden have had ups and downs, but they consistently stuck to their unique style. 2006's A Matter of Life and Death saw a serious departure from that style towards a darker, more progressive sound - it was only a partial success. Unfortunately, Steve Harris and Co. felt encouraged, and decided to go further in their departures. The first 4 songs on The Final Frontier rank among the worst this band has ever committed and most of the time sound nothing like the Iron Maiden everyone knows. Departure from style my ass. If they wanted to depart again, the previous album was the way to do it.

It seems like it's become trendy to dislike any music that becomes even somewhat mainstream. I am by no means bitter; I'm guilty of this prejudice quite often. So, when I saw the album votes go the way they did for The Final Frontier I wasn't shocked. But, in all honesty, I thought this album was pretty hard! This is one of Maiden's most successful albums to date and for a damn good reason. While it does sound different from anything they've done before, that doesn't make it worse. Do you really want three albums that sound exactly like Brave New World?

An album that skirts the title of worst album in Iron Maiden discography by fortune of existing in a world where Dance of Death exists, The Final Frontier is a well-intentioned album that seems stuck on autopilot for the most of its running time, bravely going where the band had not gone before... mediocrity. If you want a quick and concise description of this album, think "The Angel And The Gambler" in seven new guises!

Although I disagree that WTWWB sinks and stoops to the level of BYDTS. But it does get damn close.

It's really hard to make something worse than BYDTTS, honestly. This atrocity should never have been recorded.

Not really. They proved it was easy with The X Factor and Virtual XI, especially (say what you will, it's still under the Iron Maiden name).

Lots of stuff from the Blaze era is even worse than BYDTTS, indeed. It's just that I usually choose to simply ignore this period because I have nothing else to say about it than it was pure suckage.
I know it can be a matter of tastes but I will never be able to figure out how someone can like the atrocious garbage Maiden made at that time. Imagine how it was for someone like me, used to listen to "Powerslave", "Somewhere In Time" and SSOASS, to hear this abomination and compare it to what I was used to. And it's impossible not to compare both because the difference is so huge.

After listening to this whole album at least 10 times, being as open about it as possible, all I have to say to them is: "Please, just stop."

The blasphemous "A Matter of Life and Death" and now "The Final Frontier" are the biggest pieces of dogshit I could ever dream this Maiden could crank out. It is really just embarassing now. Remember, this is Maiden WITH Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson...not the X Factor / Virtual XI garbage with Bailey and no Smith (which understandbly sucked). Brave New World was decent, Dance of Death was good, but what the hell happened?

Sigh... I feel the opposite - the album has leaked, I listened to it and i was quite disapponited; here I thought No Prayer or Virtual XI were weak, well the new one is even more uninspired than those.

sorry to be a party pooper even before the album's release.

I get your point. I mean, the difference between line-ups and that they should be able to create something good because it's the line-up they had in the 80s, apart from Gers. Let me tell you my deepest thoughts on the matter.

The chemistry that allowed Maiden to release great albums during the golden years was broken after SSOASS and led to Adrian's departure. This is when Maiden died. NPFTD sucked and Maiden have never been the same after SSOASS, only a shadow of their former self. And they will never be more than that. The chemistry, the magic, has been broken forever.

The comeback of Bruce and Adrian is just a case of "too little too late". Maiden took such a downward spiral after SSOASS, with each album being more awful than the last until they reached the very pit of mediocrity with Virtual crap, that it was simply impossible for them to recover. They had dropped too low in the abyss to ever have a chance to climb back up. The band is not suddenly finished now, with the new album. It was already finished two decades ago.

I think what prevents so many people to see it, when it is so clear for me, is some kind of nostalgia that blinds them. Perhaps it is so obvious for me simply because I have nothing of a sentimental or romantic person. Because I'm rather cold and pragmatic.

"This band carries on only by name and because of its past."

Which is why they choose not to play classics and only new material at concerts, right? I guess we can also discard Dickinson's interview where he says they make new albums because they don't want to become a heritage act and bore people.

Your kind of stupid is not why I post here. I'm disappointed. Fuck off now.

"They're much less bad the 90s stuff but the new albums with Bruce are quite boring and lack any kind of energy. They sound only like a commercial product released only for the sake of money."

But at the same time, their albums are much longer and don't sound like 80's material. Doesn't sound commercial to me.

Take the Slipknot album out of your ass and work to become smarter.

You know, with a username such as yours, It's really hard to take you seriously and think your opinions have any kind of credibility if Maiden is involved.
This band attracts fanboys the same way a turd does with flies.

N.B. I have nothing against those who like this band and can discuss it with civility but fanboys coming here all guns blazing deserve to be treated accordingly.

That is far too simplistic an explanation. I genuinely like quite a lot of the music Maiden made after 88'. Nostalgia has nothing to do with it. At least not for me. In fact, you could turn that on it's head, and say its exactly because of sentimentality and nostalgia which prevents some old school Maiden fans from liking anything aside from the 80's stuff. Like I stated in a previous post, I dont think there's a simple black and white answer to why some people can appreciate most of Maiden's discography, and other's cannot. Take Heinosity: He said he likes BNW, and DOD, but hates AMOLAD, the Blaze stuff, and the new album. Its all just opinions at the end of the day really.

@LordMaiden: Geez... could you not have said all that in one post? There's no need for the multiple posts...

And people are free to dislike Maiden, or portions of their career if they wish. Of course, there are some who do that for frivolous reasons, but that goes for blind fanboys as well. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

It can be turned the other way around, indeed. In fact, I had exatly this thought when I wrote the post you quoted. But it is not a matter of nostalgia in my case (as to why I dislike post-SSOASS Maiden).

Exactly. People who dislike something don't need to justify themselves. We're not forced to like everything.

It's not stupid. Because even if a reason is provided, if you dont agree with it, you'd likely call the reason "illigitemate". Everyone has reasons for liking/disliking certain albums/bands. But it's not really a thing that can be universally agreed upon. Therefore, asking for people to give "reasons" for disliking certain music is a pointless excercise.

All I see here are idiotic statements from people who have an obvious short attention span for Maiden. To expect them to write songs like it is the 80's in 2010 doesn't inspire an intelligent discussion.

And if I'm such a Maiden fanboy, why wouldn't I be able to back up anything? That's like saying your 1995 Volvo is going to outperform my 2010 BMW.

It is indeed sad that Iron Maiden's incredible 7 album '80s run comes back to bite them in the ass. Because they no longer write songs like they did back then, every album released since Bruce and Adrian returned has received some of the most laughable criticism ever. That being said, the comments I am seeing here are just hysterical.

The Final Frontier is a wonderful album.

End of story.
