I just purchased this album, as it's one of the highest rated albums on Metalstorm (that has at least 15 votes) and I wanted to experience it for myself.
I have to say, it's exceptional based on the few listens I've had.
My only disappointment is in the quality of the recording. It sounds very low budget. Whilst this is not the end of the world, it does detract from the overall experience of what could've been a near perfect album.

I guarantee it wouldn't sound nearly as good if the production was "better". It would change the dynamic too much and probably sound like a poncey folk record or something. I love how it sounds almost Ildjarn-y at certain points.
I'm also glad this is maintaining one of the highest scores on here. If it got another positive vote it would probably be made the top album of its year (and would knock the overrated 'The Mantle' off its pedestal, to my amusement).
It deserves a good fan review too, I was gonna do one but I found this quite difficult to write about for some reason.

Now having listened to it many times, I totally agree with you. The recording is, for this style of music, perfect. It lends it a certain atmosphere that would be lost had the production been more polished.
