The year is 1979, Black Sabbath returned from touring in support of Never Say Die!. Tony Iommi was unhappy with Ozzy Osbourne and he decided to fire him from band. Ronnie James Dio left Rainbow in 1979 due to creative differences. Sharon Arden suggested Dio to Iommi and he officially joined the band. They started to work on a new album, which will become some of the most essential ''reading'' for every metalhead on the world.

The album, the name, and the last band Ronnie toured with. This album turned 30 years old last month, which is surely testament to the timeless quality of this true heavy metal classic. There's no better time than now to blast it out one more time.

One of my favorite albums from Black Sabbath. Some may argue this, but, Dio, in my eyes, was always a more talented vocalist when compared to Ozzy Osbourne. Each and every song on this album is amazing, my only possible falter being "Die Young", which is still a great song.
The very first Black Sabbath song I heard was "Children Of The Sea", which I thought was godly at the time. That's what really got me into the "Metal" scene, despite me being so young. And after going through album after album of Black Sabbath's, I've concluded that this is their best album, in my opinion, behind Black Sabbath, their debut album.
So, this being the album that introduced me to this wonderful genre of music, I rate it a perfect 10/10. Not only because it introduced me to such an amazing genre, but because there's not on complaint on the album itself.
Lovely. Dio at his peak, after Rainbow and before Dio. Amazing.

Technically Dio is faaar better than Ozzy, especially in his prime, which is Long Live Rock'n Roll and this album. how could anyone think otherwise is beyond me haha.
anyway Ozzy has his own rough, unpolished vocal style, while Dio is more like an opera singer. best example in this sense would be to compare the songs Sweet Leaf with Heaven and Hell when it comes to vocals.

For the most part I think that's the general consensus; I mean there aren't many people who are going to argue that Ozzy is a more adept vocalist or technically proficient, at least not more so than Dio, but at the end of the day if you've got Dio behind the mic for songs like War Pigs and N.I.B. ... it just wouldn't work.

For the most part I think that's the general consensus; I mean there aren't many people who are going to argue that Ozzy is a more adept vocalist or technically proficient, at least not more so than Dio, but at the end of the day if you've got Dio behind the mic for songs like War Pigs and N.I.B. ... it just wouldn't work.
Well, have you personally ever heard Dio sing War Pigs or N.I.B.? It could be better than Ozzy, for all we know - he's quite an adaptable vocalist.
I'm not arguing that Ozzy is better fit for songs like The Wizard, War Pigs, NIB, etc., I somewhat agree that Ozzy fits the early Black Sabbath very well.

Well yep, I'm certainly not going to say that Ozzy is a better vocalist than Ronnie, cos that would just be silly.  But for all the classic Sabbath material that Ozzy sang on... nobody could sound better doing that stuff than Ozzy. People can say what the want, but to me, his voice just fits so perfectly with that music. Regardless of his overall technical vocal ability. (which while its not great, I do think is better than most give him credit for)
As for this album, what can I say? It's a total classic in every sense of the word, and Ronnie totally resurrected the band with it, no doubt about that. At this point in time, it was like Dio could do no wrong, everything he touched turned to musical gold. Just genius!

I have to disagree with that actually. Yeah, Dio's commonly thought of moreso as a dungeons and dragons-esque power metal like vocalist, but his voice is also suited quite well (in my opinion) for some more bluesy stuff as well, as evidenced by some of his material with Rainbow, and even further back to Ronnie And the Redcaps. Live Evil is a good example of how Dio sounds singing older Sabbath songs, and honestly, he's pretty decent at them.

This album is great, but I feel as if it's slightly overhyped. I mean, Dio's vocals are obviously the main focus here in a lot of fans' eyes, and they are very well executed, but what about the music itself? To me the songs themselves don't seem to be any differetn to anything BS had done ten years before. Every song on here is really good, but it's not 'that' special, if you know what I mean. Aside from that, this still is one hell of a good comeback after 'Never say die'.

I've been on a Heaven & Hell kick the last few months and each time I'm ready to move on to a new band/album a different song hooks me in. This album has so much beauty and soul in it that I cannot tear myself away.
This album has inspired me to sing (I'm pretty monotone), play bass (never considered it before), play guitar (something I wish to do) and pound the fuck out of some drums. Something that few albums have done before.
I'm pretty shitfaced on tequila, but I hope Ronnie James Dio is outsinging a bunch of fucking angels in Heaven and out-yelling some demons in Hell.
Rock on, RJD. rock the fuck on. I should remove the swearing, as I never heard any cussing in any RJD-penned songs, but fuck it. Rock the fuck on!!!
