Staff review by
Doc Godin

Admittedly, I have been quite critical in the past of this genre called "folk metal". It was novel and fun at first, but after a while - like any other genre - it became watered down with a lot of worthless crap. It's a lot easier for me to put down crappy folk metal than any other genre. I'm a man who appreciates solid riffing above anything else, and when any potential riffing is completely drowned out in accordions or synthesizers (not mentioning a particular Finnish band that begins with a "K"), I get angry. No one likes a rabid reviewer when they're angry. However, every once in a while a band or album will come along to raise the bar for metal as a whole; using the folk sound to enhance the music rather than cover up any lack of song writing abilities with gimmicky child's play. With Goi, Rode, Goi!, Arkona have undoubtedly secured their place next to the more respectable folk acts out there these days such as Moonsorrow and Eluveitie.

Na Moei Zemle is in my opinion one of the best folk metal songs ever. It features members from Månegarm, Obtest, Skyforger, Menhir and Heidevolk

This is what I love about folk metal:
"This is a song about a warrior who leaves his motherland to seek happiness in other countries. He meets foreign folk and asks them what their happiness is about. And they tell him that their happiness is their beautiful land, traditions, folk, home, their children, and Gods. After a long journey, the warrior returns back to his native land to find peace and happiness there."

Rating: 9 One of the best band's recorded so far, in my opinion. As usually, it's diverse - it has folk numbers, fast and aggressive songs and long and epic tracks. What's peculiar about this particular album is that guitar riffs sound more intricate. Not really progressive, but with some nice breaks from the straight-forward riff barrage.
And surely На моей земле is a peculiar song because it features many singers, each one of them singing in their native language.

Rating: 9 Honestly the only significant drawback of the album is its gargantuan length. But, taken in bits, this is an amazing album and is one of my favorites ever.
