The silence that arrived after Anneke Van Giersbergen left The Gathering was quite a challenge for those who loved the band and their singer. Anneke delighted the audiences with a beautiful solo album but it was still unknown what would happen to The Gathering or who would fill the bottomless gorge (because gap would be too small of a word to describe it) Anneke had left. The anticipation grew day by day until The West Pole was finally released in May this year and Octavia Sperati's Silje Wergeland was announced as the new lead vocalist.

I think this is the second best studio album from The Gathering. Mandylion #1, Souvenirs #3, Nighttime Birds #4, Always #5.

Your problem
...Always was ahead of its time and still the best thing they ever did. They never came close again. They moved towards a Pink Floyd copying band afterwards

Always... is a good one. And it was more original than, for instance, Nigthtime Birds. But I happen to like Nighttime Birds more. Always' biggest problem to me is in its onwards-flowing, it starts superbly, flows into 'funny tunes' (those 'cheap' keyboard-driven sections, but this is also a + -thing for the uniqueness 'though as a downside it hits the progression of the album). And somehow at the middle of this album my mood has turned into just 'good' but the last tracks of the album improves the whole experience again. Track-wise I can differ the classic ones from the good/decent ones. It's quite odd that unlinke many bands at the time, The Gathering didn't shine on their second album Almost A Dance, it was an early letdown.
Mandylion delivers all the time

Mandylion delivers all the time
Almost A Dance is horrendous, but then again had different vocalists to Alaways. Mandylion I find to get boring pretty quickly cause it's all a little too same the song. And Nighttime Birds is just a watered down weaker copy of Mandylion
