A band that recently popped out of nowhere, got raving reviews, then disappeared again is Brown Jenkins. Dagonite and Angel Eyes really impressed me and the majority of the Doom/Black & Depressive Black metal scene, then Brown Jenkins decided to call it quits in November '08. A final swansong in the form of the aptly titled Death Obsession has to lessen our grief now. So, does it?

Interesting you consider this doom. Personally I always found Brown Jenkins one of the hardest bands to classify. They don't really sound like doom, but they don't sound black metal either. But that's vaguely what I call them.

Really? Hmmm, I definitely hear the doom in this. Bands that are considered blackened doom often have some kind of psychedelic sound. Maybe this doesn't seem to make sense, but when I listen to this or Dolorian or even The Ruins of Beverast (not the debut of course), I always get that feeling. Especially with Dolorian though, since they are more than just blackened doom. Wouldn't Dolorian be harder to classify?

Listening to this again, and whilst there is definitely a doomy, oppressive veil encompassing this whole album I really don't feel that doom is correct here. To me this sounds like a mixture of Terra Tenerosa, Xasthur and Virus. The majority of the album seems trudging and lethargic but not sure it's "doom" slow. Seems to be mostly mid-paced really and the riffing and structure feels more like avant-garde black.

I agree about Dolorian. Quite a hard band to pigeon-hole.

This really is excellent though, might top this up to a 9.

Everytime I listen to it, I feel like my brain is being bleached and flossed in a similar way to drone (which might be why its black/doom). Still is a super unique record which isn't EXACTLY anything.

I see what you mean, but kind of disagree with not calling this doom (primarily it's BM of course). For example, the intro of the 2nd song is pretty "doom" if you ask me. What you might think of as avantgarde, I thought of being psychedelic or something, so like you said it's indeed hard to label this an exact genre. I might go with avantgarde blackened doom, but whether that's accurate or not, I'm not sure.

Dolorian I might call phychedelic though, and also blackened doom. Anyway... while this album is actually really monotonous, I still enjoy it a lot for some reason.

Haha, I know the feeling now. However, I can't say I hear drone in this, but then again I'm not very familiar with drone in the first place. And yeah, the only band I know that compares to this musically would be Dolorian, so indeed very unique stuff. Is the debut just as good?

I wouldn't call it drone by its content, but rather by its effect. Either way, I usually just throw this into black metal when I want to label it and leave it at that

Barring the pauses between tracks, you wouldn't know where one began and ended. Not necessarily a defect, but in this case it is. Interesting tone and atmosphere, but incredibly monotonous

I heard this the other day as well and I was thinking the exact same thing on an initial listen. It certainly seems like this is incredibly overrated, although maybe another listen or two will reveal something for me.

Wouldn't use the word overrated for a band of this style... It's not like they get a lot of attention.

Perhaps it was the wrong word.

I guess what I meant was...in the underground metal scene, this band appears to be achieving a reputation that is undeserved.

I was going to say that the praise seemed to be primarily MS-exclusive, but then I looked at the Metal-Archives reviews. I'm honestly upset that this hasn't clicked with me. Everyone seems to be orgasming over it, and I'm just sitting here unsatisfied and confused.

This doesn't do much for me too. It's good album bun not mind blowing. I guess a part of problem is that the whole thing is too samy and repetitive. The length is not justified IMO.

Well Alex, you're not alone. Lucas showed me that other album of his, and even if I was a bm lover back then, I just never could get into it. I tried this album when that silly debate started, but I still don't like Blow Job.
