The Best DVD of 2005

This DVD proves once again why we love these Swedish guys. To begin this review I would like to say that anyone who would like to have a good live DVD should buy this. Not only because of the quality, which is perfect almost in the whole DVD, but also about the lenght of this DVD.

This is a double DVD. At first we have Live At Sticky Fingers, Gothenburg (September 7th 2004) - this domestic show is half the DVD - in which they play the whole Soundtrack To Your Escape (WOW) and some other "hits" of theirs. We continue Live At Hammersmith, London (December 27th 2004) which is a great show too in which they play their greatest hits. In the first DVD it has other two songs from the Soundtrack Tour 2004 which in my opinion was the best venue and they should have more songs form that. In the Only for the Weak my hair tried to get out of my skin. What a feeling, I can't explain it. The performance of the band is like the cd, no mistakes in it, just perfect

Not good for fans of old IF material IMO, the band is so much different here. I wish this DVD was made or the gigs were recorded a few years earlier, because this is their first DVD and there is no high quality video material from their "golden age". The abundance of newer IF songs on these sets is too much IMO, I mean there are good songs, but about half of these "Reroute to Remain" and "Soundtrack to Your Escape" songs act as fillers. I guess the same would happen if they played almost all of their songs from the early albums, but that's not really the point here. The point is that the sets are out of balance, and that applies especially to the first half of the Sticky Fingers set. The question "to skip or not to skip?" popped up in my mind frequently during said set.

It's evident that IF was in transition at the time of this DVD, in a kind of awkward state where they were going for more modern (mainstream? nu-metal??) direction and at the same time were holding on to their past of Göteborg metal roots, with mixed results I'd say. The one thing that suffered mostly due to the change is IMO Fridén's vocals, that would sound way different on the DVD than on the albums. Though I do respect the band for giving a solid performance and including also those classic IF songs (the performance of those were surprisingly good as well!) on the sets.

Bottom line; good for fans of new IF material, MEH/ok for those who liked the melodeath IF.
