The beginning of what I like to call the 'Power Trio' by akercocke, obviously referring to this, 'Words that go Unspoken...' and 'Antichrist' albums. It's interesting that I had no idea where this so-called 'Choronzon' idea came from, until i watched an episode from the Hammer Horror series, in which this episode was dedicated to the 'Choronzon' religion. Aside from that conceptual realisation, the music itself is intriguingly mysterious with every single listen. It may be the distorted guitars, the warped, harsh vocals of Mendonca alongside such melodious songs as 'Son of the morning' or 'Valley of the crucified' or indeed the instrumental interludes themselves, which also pay full tribute to the significance of this album itself. One could still lump this album with the classic death metal genre, but its hard not to ignore the synthesiser-led tracks (Son of the morning), the spoken-word introductions (Praise the name of satan), or even screams from dying souls (Upon coriascious wings). Put simply, everything about 'Choronzon' seems to have its own importance, and even if some people get tired of the similar riffs throughout, there is still plenty more to quench one's thirst for forward-thinking extreme metal.

Far too many blast beats and screeching vocals for me to appreciate the musicianship behind those aspects

Uh, coming from someone else who doesn't listen to or appreciate extreme metal, why would you bother listening to a band who plays a style you know you won't like?

It's a black/death metal band. Of course there's going to be blast beats and screeching vocals.

Hah. Your name suits you well I really enjoyed their successive album Words, because it had far more progressive elements, and the more extreme elements weren't as deterring. Gave this album a shot and it proved far too extreme for my tastes. Think before you assume xD

Huh, and it's here when they start to go more and more progressive. If that's how you feel then don't check the first two either.
Check the last one though.

Liking Words but disliking this makes absolutely no sense to me. The differences are minor in terms of progressiveness and extremity. I see them as brother albums.

I agree. They are very similar to each other. It's on Antichrist there's quite a difference (mainly the production).

The other two guys seemed to answer you better than I could have, since I don't listen to this stuff. The only thing I assumed was that you went in listening to an extreme metal band and didn't like it because it was extreme. It seemed kind of contradictory.

I think Choronzon sounds a bit darker and more sinister than Words, which could make it sound more extreme. Both are amazing albums.
