With The Hunter, Mastodon are out of their element. Or rather out of elements. Fortunately, after releasing albums loosely themed about fire, water, earth, and air, the Georgia quartet ignored Metalstormers' pleas for a Captain Planet album to tie it all together.

So as for the new album, the immediate TL;DR is this: If you were expecting Leviathan 2.0 or Remission MMXII, you'll likely be disappointed. If you were cool with Crack The Skye, it's a safe bet you will enjoy this one as well.

I wish it is a new studio album but if so then will it stand up to their previous
works?? bcuz it seems like too early a time to record a follow-up.......
DjentDude - 24.03.2011 at 08:35
So its wind this time around? Soft and flowing like CtS but still Heavy and stormy and blowing like Leviathan? that would be cool. A middle ground
TEA_DEMON - 28.04.2011 at 10:30
Apparently this is going to be in the same vein as leviathan and less progressive, so it should be good knowing mastodon.

Mastodon must really love their drugs to come up with those song titles and cover art.. but then again.. they've always put out some whacky stuff. can't wait for to hear the songs

I read about this album on wikipedia (i know wikipedia lies but, doesn't lie in everything) and much other places and i'm definitly going on this album! :-) ...i have good hopes on this one and i hope those reviews i've read could be true! :-)

Mastodon rules! \m/
Dolo - 20.09.2011 at 06:43
So the album has leaked. Thoughts? It feels like it's pretty much back to basics on this album. I miss the long epic songs from CtS, as well as the stellar production quality. Not bad, but not their best.
RockeRoy - 20.09.2011 at 09:51
I have listen through The hunter a couple of times, and it's good.. just not shure how good yet. But the riffing are heavy, vocals are exprimental, but mainly clean or "Semi growling" the drums are fantastic as always and the bass is prominent in the mix, which is good... I have to give it a couple of more spinns before i can give a rating though
Ankläger - 21.09.2011 at 00:43
It sounds like a melodic ("modern") Remission to me...
I wish they'd play sludge again.

Huh, a modern melodic Remission?
It is a natural progression from Crack The Skye, it once again misses the brilliance of the first two albums. This one is once again sludge light (just like Crack the Skye)

i like it, and it does have some of the energy of the earlier work with parts and structures reminiscent of Crack The Skye at times. I'd say it is closer to a step back than a continued progression of CTS. i wouldn't even call CTS sludge light. this one is, CTS wasn't... we put it in Alternative Metal for the MSA's.

Why Brent Hinds's voice always reminds me of Ozzy's, I'm I the only one?
afu - 22.09.2011 at 09:47
Rating: 9 I love the sound of this album. I love trippy shit and this one is swaying into Monster Magnet's musical territory in a couple of places, but with more elaborate songs. Maybe if Magnet, Tool, and Led Zeppelin's albums became self-aware and had a massive orgy it would give birth to the more atmospheric songs. Dopes To Infinity + Lateralus + Physical Graffiti. Those are my points of reference....

These songs are cool. I can't wait to go buy this.

Ironically one of the songs on the album (I think its The Hunter) Pay tribute to a song by the Fab Four.

I am wondering if the Octopus is Brann. The Walrus is Paul......

Hunter's lyrics "Love you make......." is from Beatles' Abbey Road album, which is excellent. The Beatles song is called The End; it's good for a late-era "Paul" song and makes up for Maxwell's Silver Hammer.

Rating: 8 Not a single song I didn't like, awesomeness all over, some rather experimental songs, interesting lyrics, great production, fun, hook, heavy, soft, prog, vocal harmonies all over...
This album is great, now I have another candidate for best of the year.
Entropic Silence - 27.09.2011 at 07:30
Initial thoughts positive, needs some time before it goes down properly just like any Mastodon album. Actually got it on the 26th - bless NZ releases, not only are we 12 hours ahead but no-one bothers to hold releases over here. Good listen. Highlight is definitely Troy's vocals.

Bonus DVD is a waste of cash compared to the Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye docos. Total footage is only about 20mins (excluding music videos), with at least 15min of Bran Dailor exclusive. Nothing against the guy, but it would have been nice for the others to feature a wee bit more.

Hahaha I agree.. Brann is probably the best drummer of the past 10 years.

I'm with you on that. I'd probably give CtS a 4 or 5/10, but this album definitely grabbed my attention and held it all the way through. A nice rebound (although many will disagree that they didn't have anything to rebound from since they liked CtS so much), which will definitely keep me waiting for their next release with high hopes.

Rating: 7 The band have finally found the way up again after having gone down with every album after remission. This one is so much better than Crack the Skye.
Only downpoint are the horrendous clean vocals especially when they sing together and try to harmonize.
