Another tough one. When you have seasoned veterans such as these two fellas from Fates Warning fame (not to mention a crack team of session musicians), you come to expect some kind of solid direction. Although this album does deliver it's fair share of brain melting riffs, it's something that also has a large tendency to fall into pointless, jumbled meandering - a problem more associated with younger prog acts who have not fully grasped the concept of a little tasteful subtlety.
This album is awesome. So much techy proggy stuff going on yet there are so many catchy riffs. John Arch's voice just soars over each song. Matheo's guitar work is phenomenal. Joey Vera's bass is solid and a great addition to the album. I am looking forward to hearing more from the band and their debut just came out.
I am so glad this album came out when it did, there weren't that many spectacular releases coming out in 2011, or at least they were all being overshadowed by the extremely shitty releases (Morbid Angel, Metallica/Lou Reed, and Queensrÿche, I'm looking right at you). There were great releases coming out that year, but I feel Sympathetic Resonance was the only truly incredible album to come out that year to outshine the horrible monstrosities that came out that summer. That's just me anyway. Amazing stuff.
