I tried listening to this. I like her voice, but man, this shit is mellow! Maybe I need a few more spins.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I love mellow stuff (Lord Wind, Musk Ox, etc.), but this just seems... empty. Almost intolerably so.

Ha. I couldn't make it through one song! If you go on their bandcamp page they have a few other full-length albums, so somebody must dig them!

Ok, I'm glad someone said it. I think I'm gonna check this off in my colleection and make it the lowest rated album I have...just beacuse I can!

Oh wait, it says Dec 2012...maybe this album is a beta-test or demo or something...not the REAL release!

Haha, I don't think so. It's just that MS hasn't taken notice of its release because it's so poor. It actually came out on March 20th!

Yeah, I think i would check it out because not a lot of stuff actually deserves a 2. Very few things are so offensive

As far as I'm concerned this is just their second album.

Well there's a difference between liking something because it's original and liking something because it's good.

Not that I can say anything about the quality since I haven't listened to it myself, but the point still stands.

IronAngel - 19.06.2012 at 01:10
Rating: 6 Wtf. This album is good stuff. It's not very memorable so it probably won't quite get into that "very good" 3.5/5 category that most of my favorites fall into, but it's definetely a strong 3/5. I think it'll grow on me. Lovely sound, though "original" is not a word I'd use. More like eclectic. It's like they took some Planning for Burial, Flood-era Boris or similar minimal post-rock, some dream pop like A Whisper In The Noise, and played it very quietly. It's not like combining ambient, post-rock and dream pop is something uncommon.

Not sure what makes them a metal band, though. They do have some doomy (or atmosludge) riffs, and especially the bass reminds me of doom metal, but it's played way lighter.

Wtf. This album is good stuff.

I agree... I simply fail to see how this music can be offensive enough to get a 3. I find it pretty sweet and relaxing stuff. I think the reasons they have to get added (yet not visible) are just like you say
"They do have some doomy (or atmosludge) riffs, and especially the bass reminds me of doom metal" and let's not forget the connection with Agalloch (and probably Ludicra) in terms of band members.

.... It's like the solo of the other dude from Agalloch that got added simply because we can but more important: Because it might be of interest to some people.
I think this has always been the idea behind Metalstorm adding bands like this one... Simply because it might interest other people considering it's connections (as light as they might be) with metal. After all... it's not like MS's major interest is being anal with its archives. The site considers those who listen to more than just metal and add shit that's not really metal but has some trivia related to it... that's part of the reason to why I loved this place when I found it.

Back to the music, this goes from strong 7 to light 8 depending on my mood. It has been a while since I've heard it but I do remember liking it a lot and wondering how it got such a low rating.

I only had a listen to a few of the tracks a while back but it sounded like a whole lot of nothing to me.
IronAngel - 30.08.2012 at 01:32
Rating: 6 I liked this more originally. Sounded like the album would grow on me, but it didn't. Here's what I said in my brief RYM reviewish:

Quote:

This is a bunch of laid-back tunes operating somewhere between post-rock and maybe slowcore. Female vocals somewhere between wispy and haunting, a warm bass weaving its lines prominently, and guitar riffs that could be from any other post-rock band. One thing that sets this album apart is that it's really quiet. For long periods at a time, the sparse vocals are backed by nothing but a lazy bass line and somebody gently stroking the hi-hat. Actual riffs are few and far between, and they're pretty mediocre.

It's meandering and melodramatic. The music is focused on an aural aesthetic rather than substance in songwriting, but the tricks used are somewhat trite and ineffective. The haunted medieval abbey/ghost opera/fey vocals are the worst offender, but the overall sound seems muffled and repressed. It gets better when the guitar comes in, the volume rises to audible levels and the woman shuts up. At times this album is actually catchy stuff, and it avoids some of the worst clichés in post-rock. It doesn't sound like it's directly ripping off any one band. Unfortunately, half the album is sleep-inducing noodling devoid of ideas. The last track, Penumbra, is outright offensive in its emptiness. They have a nice style going that could work if they bothered to write good songs and learn a little about dynamics.

Highlight: Withered

I gave it 2,5/5, "Quite listenable." It's not bad by any means, but there's way too much filler and the last track is atrociously bad. I quite like the few more dynamic tracks.

After all the posts here I gave it another spin and...well...nope, nothing. Same opinion as before. Just not for me, ever, again.
BlueMobius - 30.08.2012 at 14:45
This is an interesting band and I get how some people would not understand their music. When they played the middle set with Loss (USA) and Agalloch it was definitely an abrupt break in energy, but it wasn't bad. It's definitely not for everyone. But I don't understand going to a band and down voting an album you just don't get. I don't like Opeth because I really just don't like what they do, but I don't feel compelled to go give low scores to their albums because I know my opinion of them is so skewed it would be just a jerk thing to do.

Yeah, I dig quite a lot of "shapeless" ambient and I don't find it bad that it can be quite "empty" in a couple of places... When I'm relaxing while listening to drone, noise or ambient it's like my mind is filling the blanks and that calms me.

I know I'm quoting from 2 years ago, but I'm with you on this one. I really can't see how people hate this enough to give it a 3 or 4. I just got into this album and I've been really digging it. Great stuff. I think it might be more up an ambient music fans alley though and that might be why some people don't dig it. All I know is it's fantastic.

Rating: 4 Just realized Aesop Dekker is in this band. That doesn't change my opinion...but it does make me mildly sad.
