It's not your fault if you listen to Griseus and mysterious images haunt you through the album. It's the attitude of this masterwork, you can just listen and totally get lost in it. Just lean back, play the music and let this be your marvelous journey to mystery and nature. You will be surprised how delightful it will be.

I am currently in a round of doing reviews on first time listens. Everything that comes to hand from random searches. Right now, I'm so glad that this is the first piece of my experiment. Due to this I won't give any rating, you better try it for yourself.

Imagine your non-kvlt epic black metal band doing top notch music. Give it some more touch. And even more.

The fact that it's a solo project makes it even more impressive.

Overrated?

Yep. Including by myself, initially. I still think it's a pretty darn good album, but listening to it all the way through becomes a chore due to its length (a flaw that so many one-man atmoblack projects' albums seem to have) and like Troy said some time ago, the classical elements are something of a nuisance, because the heavier parts are so much better.

Just stumbled upon an interview where Horace claims the album took "2300 litres of black tea and 1200 litres of vino" to record and produce - no wonder it's such a masterpiece .

Ok so, another one of those albums where I go like:
Come on now, there must be something really good about this, I mean look, so many people praising the shit out of it.
So I give it another try after a couple of years.
(And I like Symphonic Black in general quite a lot, am a huge fan of Summoning e.g.)
Yet again, here I come to the same conclusion:
Griseus basically has all the elements I want it to have, and they are for themselves all well performed (that is why I have at least a 7 here).
But other than that I can really not find anything that particularly attracts my attention here.
Have tried several times now -- well not a 100 times but I now really dont feel like I want to give it yet another try, that would surely be different with albums that grow on me, where from each listen to the next I keep the urge to give it yet another spin because I somehow have this feeling that I havent discovered everyhing yet in every detail it should be considered, or that I just want to listen to some particular detail again. That is definitely not the case with this album, I will bury it now I guess. :

Well that's ok, not every album is gonna connect with you, even if it is your style. It's great that you've given it several chances instead of rating it 2 or 3 and saying "overrated" in the comments, which is neither constructive nor interesting to anyone.
I am of the opinion that this is a masterpiece, one of the best albums in the last 10 years. Attention to detail is amazing, its complexity and atmosphere as well as beautiful acoustic and piano passages are growing on me with every listen.
Edit: Forgot to mention the cover art which is absolutely amazing. Looks like a late baroque picture.

If all of the tracks were the same quality as the first two, this would be a masterpiece.

This album is really a master of works. This is how we should go about creating art in this forsaken world! I just come back to this album a lot, it's great.

Really good album.

although it is far from perfect since I think the heavy parts sound a bit rough, and some of them go where they should not. classical parts sometimes sound like the sum of many parts but not a whole.

even so, I have listened to it several times and it is simply relaxing and inspiring at the same time. and that it's a one-man project makes it really motivating for any songwriter.

A Nice Guy
It has instrumental parts, but it's so damn long and at times gets boring. I understand that a lot of time and effort went into this project and I respect that, it's beautiful music in a way, however after listening to the whole album, I have to admit I don't desire revising it again anytime soon.

Same with me. The classical parts are breathtaking, this album has the perfect balance. Shame it's not more memorable.
