How does a band top a masterpiece, exactly? Within metal, history has shown us with albums like Human and Hammerheart that it's typically done by changing their sound to something different, but still potent and effective. While this may sound like a bunch of theoretical bullshit, in the case of Lord Mantis, this rule is proving true yet again with Death Mask, an album that may not live up to its landmark predecessor, but perhaps doesn't have to.

After tasting "Pervertor", I'm getting hungry again. I need to swallow this record the day it comes out. Mhm ,Yum.

Well I can say for certain that this isn't as good as Pervertor, it's just not as dirty, intense and mechanically bludgeoning, but it is a very good album nonetheless. From the first listen I'd have to say Negative Birth is the standout track, just because it has such pace to it. Not disappointed by this, even if it didn't quite live up to expectations.

I'm listening to it in class currently, and I'm just not impressed at all. A bit more let down than you currently, but it might grow on me with repeated listens.

Well it seems to have all the components of a Lord Mantis album, just a bit more "mature", which I quote very heavily as it's kind of a bullshit phrase. A solid 8 so far, I suspect further listens may improve it slightly.

ُُStill not sure how I feel about it. It's not bad by no means but somehow it's less thick and crushing than the previous one. I really disliked the 6th track, coil, especially due to the processed vocals.

Sick, twisted, more matured songwriting, and, a element of black metal, upon first listen I heard a huge leviathan influence especially with the tracks death mask and negative birth. Very uneasy and harsh album to listen to and immediately enjoy. The more I listen to it, and let it develop, the more I enjoy it. Album of year so far.

The previous album is better, imo. Not only better but one of the best albums of its kind.

Pervertor is definitely one of the best albums of the entire blackened sludge style. To me it's like an unholy triology:

Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred For Mankind (2009)
Alkerdeel - Morinde (2012)
Lord Mantis - Pervertor (2012)

Crème de la crème...

Pervertor is more intense, faster, more industrialised (or perhaps mechanical would be a better way to describe it) and generally a bit nastier than this one. If you like that idea then you'll like it.

It kind of plods along, but there is something very hypnotic about it. I like that it gives the album a bit more diversity in style.

Agreed. On the third or so listen, maybe it'll grow on me, but as of now I'd probably just give it a 7.

Kinda disappointing to me. I wasn't expecting anything in particular, it just felt disconnected somehow and lacks great moments throughout. Good, but could be a lot better.

I've seen this on a lot of year-end lists so I had to give it a listen. It absolutely bored me. Not a bad album but certainly nothing memorable.
EDIT: The album has grown on me quite a bit. Grimy and bludgeoning though repetitive and some tracks are too long for their own good.

Good album. No doubt about it.

But, when Death Mask is compared with "Pervertor" - disappointing release. Independently, this record has few pros and cons and has its own stature of brilliancy. Look, "Death Mask" has its own flavors and has rough, edgy and thick sludge tone which boost the morale of listeners.

As i said, good record but overshadowed by their career best Pervetor.

Disappointing and something I never came back to. Just like Coffinworm and Indian's releases. Was not their year and they were bested by some other upstarts.

Shut up, Indian's latest one might not be as good as the previous album but it still owns the latest Lord Mantis and Coffinworm.
