It's near impossible for me to stay unbiased when it comes to Eyehategod. They, along with sludge masters Acid Bath, have been my main soundtrack for most of my teen years. There's something about their uncompromised sense of anger mixed with groove that few bands can match. What I got was all but a surprise? But hey, Eyehategod aren't after any innovation bullshit. They've always been after our throats.

I know they are from Louisiana so it's no surprise they incorporate some "southern rock" elements. I am not a fan it so it ruins the other aspects of their music for me...punk, hardcore and traditional sludge.

The problem is that tradional sludge HAS southern rock as one of the MAIN influences.... Which leads me to the conclusion that you don't really know/listen to traditional sludge.
Hence the confusion!

My bad Doc, "traditional" wasn't the word I meant - I know who those bands are - and I have given most of them a listen at some point : Buzzov*en , The Melvins, CoC and they are all not really my thing. Maybe instead of "traditional" I should use "fusion".

It's interesting that Melvins were never southern rock, due to their being up northern US (as well as batshit crazy ). "Traditional" sludge was cemented in the southern US, and picked up the southern rock influence.

I think you mean "generic" sludge, because sludge doesn't require southern rock as a primary element.

I woudn't call Eyehategod generic though. That'd be an alien thing to do as they were one of the main bands back in the day to solidify the sound.
