Any devout follower of black metal should know the name of Leviathan, a project that has helped to give America a significant presence in the genre's international scene time and time again. After a four year absence, and dealing with a few of life's many curveballs, Jeff Whitehead is back on the music scene, assaulting our eardrums with a new album from his twisted offspring. Beware: things are about to get ominous, and there's no playing it safe here.

Nihil's Maw
Took me a little while to warm up to this album, but I do enjoy it very much. I don't mind the production at all; it adds to the atmosphere and makes it sound thick and suffocating. I do sense quite a bit of death metal here--perhaps this even borders on being blackened death? Anyway, the album seems pretty varied, starting off heavy, fast paced, and damning, before moving into some sadder, gloomier territory filled with a slow despair. The interspersing of the more intense bits keeps it from becoming dull, and makes it into somewhat of a roller coaster ride between calm-intense-calm-intense. Maybe I like this more than I should, because it's my first Leviathan album, but I'm looking forward to checking out more of their earlier stuff (as well as Lurker of Chalice).

Edit: the more I listen to this, the more I'm convinced that it's probably one of my favorite albums. Just rubs me the right way, I guess.

Edit #2: after listening to the rest of the Leviathan Discography numerous times, I can say that I personally find this to be Wrest's best work to date under the Leviathan name.

Been revisiting this lately, and I seem to have forgotten how utterly brilliant it is!
He incorporated elements from every part of his back catalog and came up with a well rounded album that flows seamlessly as a single piece of music, while at the same time giving every single song its personality and purpose.
It's both true to it's roots and equally ambitious and I think it will age really well!

I had a dream last night that I met Wrest and he talked to me for a bit and then gave me a copy of this album. It was so vivid I thought it was real I know, it's very odd and random...

Funny, scary, depressing, majestic, sloppy and whatever, Leviathan doesnt seem to care. Things just doesnt fit on this album, its a bit of mish-mash at times, stuff is out of place, the harmony is disrupted, its just perfect.

Mercurial

Second best Leviathan album after Silhouette. Great melding of the best of Leviathan's sound with that of Lurker of Chalice. The production and layering make it pretty unknowable to the point that I still don't fully recognise all of the tracks after all these years, and that's a good thing.

The only good thing this band has ever done for me is Silhouette. Never got the appeal of their sound at all.

Much much weaker than Massive Conspiracy but still worth the occasional spin.
