Sulphur Aeon are a blackened death metal band from Germany. Finding some success with the debut LP, Swallowed By The Ocean's Tide, they have returned two years later to share some new Cthulu-inspired tunes and breath-taking album art in Gateway To The Antisphere. After hearing the first single, "Diluvial Ascension - Gateway To The Antisphere," I was eager to hear what this new album had to offer.

Really looking forward to this one. Exactly what Blackened Death Metal should be all about. Also the production seems to be much better while still keeping this cavelike sound their previous effort had.

Fans of Behemoth will be familiar with the similar riffing style. Don't take this to mean they sound the same, because they don't. I just see distinct similarities in certain aspects. There are some songs that particularly grabbed my attention like "Calls From Below" and "Diluvial Ascension." Unfortunately, there is an apparent sameness in the tracks that leads me to become bored at times. Between the dense production and relatively steady pacing, very little was able to grab me. I think we may have a "loudness wars" victim here. The only time I felt emotionally involved was on the much more melodious "Conclusion." The album teased me occasionally with stripped down, ear-catching moments like the intro to "He Is The Gate," and a segment near the end of "Onwards.." However, these opportunities for expansion are dropped quickly in favor of more brickwall mixing. What drew me to "Diluvial" to begin with is that the track plays with dynamics and range in a way that makes it engaging. I think Sulphur Aeon has what it takes, but they need to be a bit more adventurous and put some more finesse in the production. *Enjoyability=8.5 Musicianship=8 Innovation=6.5 Overall=7.9*

This. Also, I definitely hear the heavy Behemoth influence.

Edit: also the vocals sound really, really weak.

Very solid stuff, very ambitious but I think at times things are a little overblown-so much so that the band seem to focus more on atmosphere and bombast more than the instrumental/vocal performance. Then again, that's made up for by some seriously excellent riffs-particularly in my personal album highlights, "Calls from Below", "Abysshex" and "Onwards...Towards Kadath". I think maybe if some of the songs were a little less in-your-face (I know, that sounds really stupid), and more focussed on technical delivery, this band's musical pallette could sound finer. Whatever, still a great album in general.

Funny thing about this album is that I can listen to any song from it and really enjoy it, but never feel like listening to the rest of the album.

Yeah the songs don't really do much to distinguish themselves from one another. Pretty boring after a while.

Good starting contender for a great art, terrible music list.

What does this even mean?

This album is good but The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos is something special. Start there if you don't like this one.

If the previous two posts can't help you already, think don't judge a book by its cover but as a failo effect. It's my second time revisiting and not a single sound is remembered.
