Subsignal always seem to fly under the radar. But this new album shouldn't. The Marillion influence is strong on this one both musically and vocally. With top-notch songwriting and melodies, stunning vocal lines and well-placed bursts of aggression, The Beacons Of Somewhere Sometime shows how resourceful and creative this band is. This album is prog heaven. And the prog is good.

Hopefully they will produce something more exciting than Paraiso.

Pumped as hell for this one. Really liked all their previous albums, would be shocked if this one is not great too.

There are some astounding moments on this (especially the ending movements), but the album is bloated by the sheer length of some of these tracks. This would be fine if there was enough variety to keep the attention of the listener, but it's painfully mundane for extended periods of time. Subsignal has fallen into self-indulgence on this one and I highly doubt this will get nearly the number of listens their earlier records received. What a shame.

I see that you are a Marillion fan too, so I can see why this would be right up your alley

Certainly right up there in my list of best of the year as well. It's just that good.

Interesting. I actually think the album is quite varied and that is one of its strong suits. Yes, some songs are long and meandering but that is to be expected anyway. I like the journey

I love the journey as well, and I'm a huge Subsignal fan myself (this was probably one of my most anticipated albums this year). We'll see what happens with a few extra listens. This is very very very different prog from what I've been listening to lately (mainly, Native Construct's debut album) so maybe that's clouding my judgment and making me feel this is mundane.

Also a great album, one of the best this year but very different. Native Construct are more metal while Subsignal let the prog rock influence shine more clearly. So, I get it. Let me know if you change your mind after a few listens.

This is their best album since the debut, and I like them all, LOVE their debut. Much more "heavier" than previous albums - but also a bit more neo-prog in some aspects. Hope you give it another spin, this is my prog metal AOTY.

Looks like we'll have to disagree once again. This didn't really grow on me at all- it's pretty boring prog from a band capable of so much more, and this is coming in a year with some really amazing dynamic releases like Native Construct's Quiet World, Special Providence's Essence of Change and Leprous's new album. I feel no real emotional connection with this album, whereas the other three managed to tug at my heartstrings fairly regularly. The songwriting is unreal and Arno's still quite good, but overall it is solid but nothing exceptional. The same thing happened to me with the new Klone, the new Riverside, the new Caligula Horse and the new Arcane albums- all of those bands played it safe and their releases could only be classified as 'very good'. It was a terrible year for prog metal, avant-garde styled-prog and alternative metal. Thankfully there was a lot of good alternative metal from 2014 to tide me over- I'm still listening to Karnivool's Asymmetry album and Rishloo's Living as Ghosts.... album, for example.
