I'm hoping this album will be a grower, because Abigail blew me away right from the start, and I just haven't got the same kind of enjoyment out of this, than I did from Abigail.
The storyline is compelling, it's a great concept as a follow up to Abigail. The songwriting itself is top notch, and the vocal performance matches that of Abigail, and the album as a whole us very good, but I find as individual songs they just don't quite match the quality of King Diamond's previous releases with Abigail and Mercyful Fate.

I've always had the same reaction; this is a good album, but it's missing a lot of the memorability that Abigail had (which, to be honest, I feel was a one-off success for KD; I've tried too much to click with his other work, but the only other one that's given me any appetite to listen to it is "Them", and even that one feels like a step down from its predecessor)

Abigail is by far his best solo work imo, Them, Conspiracy and The Eye are all more or less equal quality for me. But his first two Mercyful Fate albums for me are a different class entirely.

I like it more than I did when I got it but it's a step down from Abigail IMO. It's starts off strong with Welcome Home and The Invisible Guest, especially the latter has some stellar lead guitars. After that the quality decreses until the phenomenal Twilight Symphony. Overall solid but among King's classic albums it's probably my least favourite.
