Death Angel belong in a very small and elite list of thrash bands that never fell flat on their face. I mean, how many times have you really been disappointed by them?

I'm not a huge thrash metal fan but this album was particularly repetitive with whiny vocals.
It's a huge nope for me and I'm actually surprised that it's in the top 20 albums of 2019...

Lyrics were really cheesy but that's fine. Overall I did enjoy this record quite a bit. Not the best thrash album this year but a solid and pleasant listen imo.

Decent metal album, decent old bands album, decent TM album, best what old band can offer nowadays. Thing I have seen now that new bands dont pit emotions and dont write a ballads, its sad, here we had calmer parts in the songs.

Not bad, but a significant step down from the last album. Lots of filler tracks that have no place on the album, like "Revelation Song."

There is no competition at all OVerkil's Wings Of War is the true winner for best thrash album of the year for me at least

I'll go with Paladin - Ascension. I still need to give the Overkill record a second listen and have yet to hear the F&J record but in the case of Paladin, it's been a long time since I enjoyed a thrash record as much as that one. So I doubt any thrash record will top that this year.

I'll go with Paladin - Ascension.

I saw you recommending it and listened to it yesterday. It's indeed very enjoyable, but calling it thrash is a stretch. It's a power metal album imo with some thrash and even melodeath thrown in.

Well for me it does enough to warrant the label of thrash metal. But I can see why people would consider it to be more a power metal thing. They label themselves as a mix of power metal, thrash metal and melodeath. Personally I feel that's a pretty accurate description for it and the balance between them is pretty even imo. But to me a lot of the riffs are too aggressive to be simply power metal. The solos are clearly power metal inspired and the vocals are a mix between power metal and death metal. But those death metal style vocals is something you often also come across in many thrash metal records.

So like I said I can see why people would consider it more of a power metal record than a thrash record but to me it's slightly the other way around. I don't know it's just the vibe that I get from it.

Holy sweet cow! Absolutely crashes Flotsam and Jetsam, 80s energy and attitude with mean riffs and unmatched vocals. For me best album of 2019

For me best album of 2019

I suppose you reached that informed decision after listening to half the album as well. :

Decent album though. I actually prefer the newer Death Angel stuff. I was never a fan of their 80's albums.

this is a damn enjoyable album that i have listened to more than 10 times. This is the first Death Angel record i have listened to, i have been postponing listening to The Ultra Violence for too long. From the reviews i gather that it is better than this record so tonight i must listen to it.

It depends what kind of thrash you prefer. Death Angel always had a clean sound which was in stark contrast to a lot of the bands I preferred at the time such as Kreator, Destruction, Dark Angel, Celtic Frost, Slayer and even Metallica. He also had that high ranged vocal which put me off, whereas he 's got a bit more gravelly over the years.

The overly clean production removes any of the grit needed for a thrash release, and the back half of this album is sorely lacking. It feels like a paint-by-numbers release after the first few tracks, but the catchy riffs and solos make for a somewhat engaging listen throughout. Could have been better, could have been worse. Not a waste of time listening to it but I'm far from feeling enriched in any way.
