So thank god, this is way way better than the last one. Kind of a mix of everything In Mourning has made till today.
Still need more spins, but sounds as a strong 8 for me.
Edit: gave it more spins, and it gets better with each one.

Likely their best album in my books. Tobias said they took more care to arrangements than before and I can definitely hear it!

Also a noticeable increase in the use of clean vocals, but harsh vox are still dominant.

Amazing album OMG! It's the epitome of all the styles used in their previous albums.

I dunno, I like both bands but I feel like the In Mourning/Opeth comparisons have mainly come from them both being Swedish - I don't see a strong resemblance. These guys are clearly more melodeath-inclined than Opeth ever were.

It's not really just that they're Swedish. There were more than a few moments on this thing when I though "this sounds a lot like old school Opeth". Obviously it doesn't sound like a copy or anything, but they're pretty much the best thing around that sounds anything like that.

I mean I guess there must be something to it given the number of people who say it, but it's never stood out to me. I feel like In Mourning's guitar work is too often focused about just strumming on chords for a bit before moving onto a new chord, rather than like proper riffs, whilst Opeth always felt like a riff-focussed band.

Well, I finally had a chance to listen to this record and I have to say this might be my second favourite album in their discography. A close call between this one and The Weight Of Oceans for second place, but this one just edges it out imo.

That's after a first listen though. I wouldn't be surprised if I like it even more with a couple more spins. Magenta Ritual is up there with some of my favourite In Mourning songs.

The Weight Of Oceans is my favourite of theirs as well - wasn't sure if that was a common opinion or if people preferred Monolith. To be honest, I've been playing through their albums whilst trying to prepare to review this album and their catalogue is very consistent. Afterglow seems to be the least heralded of the bunch but most people would love to have it as their worst received album. I think this one probably comes second or third for me, but not sure I have any strong hierachy, there's a lot to enjoy (without too many truly amazing moments) on all of them.

Honestly I've a hard time picking a favourite between their albums. I mean I could say Shrouded Divine but I feel like there is a bit of nostalgia involved with that one. Then it would probably be The Weight Of Oceans or this one. But those 3 are so close that in the end it really comes down to whichever one I fancy listening to on a certain day.

I like Monolith a lot but it's behind the aforementioned 3 albums for me. But honestly with In Mourning it's like you said very consistent stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if Monolith is someone elses favourite over the others.

As for Afterglow. That's a solid album imo. Their weakest? Yeah I'd say so. But indeed, a lot of other bands could only wish it was the weakest in their discography.

Don't misjudge me, I like old Opeth, but when this band loses it's catchy riffs and melodies, they become indifferent for me. Found some interesting parts in "Hierophant" and "Tribunal Of Suns", but the rest was boring for my taste. Too bad and I liked In Mourning's first releases...

I definitely enjoy it and the comparisons to Opeth people have made is quite true. That said, I don't think they have nearly as strong of an atmosphere as Opeth but, that's a hard thing to beat so I'm not making any criticisms there.

Actually I would agree on Shrouded Divine being their best. Though I never really understood what's the problem with Afterglow - I enjoyed it quite a lot. I probably like it more than Monolith and maybe even more or equal than The Weight of Oceans (controverse opinion I guess).

I'm not yet sure how to rank this one compared to the rest - but so far I really like it. Maybe one thing I noticed is, that from The Weight of Oceans onwards it took more time for me to make up my mind about their albums...

I mean, I don't find it very strange that you like Afterglow more than some of their other albums. I can totally understand that. Like I said, Afterglow is imo a solid record. So it's not unsurprising that people who like that album even more, prefer it over some of In Mourning's other records.

Honestly, I listen to all their albums on a regular basis. That just shows that I like all their stuff. But of course you will always have your favourites.

All the songs in this album have something good in them however none stands out. Maybe Magenta Ritual. It sounds good however I feel it would have been more awesome if the clean vocals were totally cut off. Totally my opinion though.

After dozens (hundreds) of spins, it still is a solid 10/10 for me.

But IMO, (unpopular opinion incoming) Afterglow is still their best in terms of composition, "feeling" and atmosphere. It did lack production-wise, but it enhanced the atmosphere.

I just can't seem to get into this. It's well produced and I like some of the melodies but nothing really sticks with me. I get old Opeth vibes and generic melo-death vibes from most songs, but it all just bores me.

Another vibrant and brightly colourful cover art to once again draw me in, unfortunately the album fails to live up to my expectations.

There are some pretty solid melodic moments but there are very few of those moments, the songwriting in general though is very emotive, more so than the previous release for sure. The vocals as usual are excellent, and so to the lyrics.

Don't get me wrong this is not a bad release by any means, they do show some quite impressive musicianship at times, I just feel that it's another release that's showing some seriously talented musicians playing decent music but have still yet to reach their full potential. I feel like there was something missing in their music, something that's hindering them from reaching that potential. Maybe I'm being too harsh on them, but to me they've always been in the shadow of Opeth and Insomnium, a decent band but not great.
