Esa Orjatsalo, who used to play in the classic Finnish power metal band Dreamtale, had been composing music on his chest of drawers with the idea of some day making a Rome-themed album. He met another power metal enthusiast, bassist Sami Hinkka while being a guitar tech for Sami's folk metal band, Ensiferum.
During the long van rides across Finland from gig to gig, these guys had many hours to talk which is where it all started. The idea of making just one theme album expanded to a totally new band. The idea was that the music would be, to put it modestly, the best power/heavy metal ever made, and every album would have be themed after a certain country's/area's history and mythology. The point was not to be "Wikipedia-metal", but contribute a new angle to the ancient stories and myths.
Besides being a world class guitar player, Esa is also a professional sound/studio engineer who already had his eyes on a fantastic young singer, Mikael Salo (Dyecrest, Thy Row etc.). When the three met, it was clear the chemistry and ambition for the music matched, thus Metal De Facto now had an amazing singer.
The band's keyboardist was found through Mikael's other band, Everfrost. Benjamin Connelly, born in Australia moved to Finland to make music in the metal hub of the world. He lives in Lapland and is a real multi-instrumentalist (keyboard, drums, guitar...), and obviously was welcomed to the band with open arms.
Mikko Salovaara is a very well known guitar hero in Finnish metal scene from numerous bands and projects for example Kiuas, Leverage, Dimebag Beyond Forever etc. Besides being a great guitar player, singer and composer he was already a good friend so it was natural to ask him to join the ranks of Metal De Facto.
Magnificent drummer Atte Marttinen (Kivimetsän Druidi) finalized the ambitious and talented line-up in Spring 2018. Even though all members have other bands, Metal De Facto is not just a side project or 'one album all-stars' thing. Everyone in the band is committed to making Power Metal great again, and countless themes await for us to explore and base our ass-kicking music on. The first album Imperium Romanum was completed in Spring 2019 and upon its release, Metal De Facto will start touring. But just as a head's up, songs for the second album are already being composed and the theme is selected, so stay tuned!
