Biography

Gnostic was formed in January of 2005 when guitarist Sonny Carson (CORPSEWORM, SEVERED) and bassist Stephen Morley (CORPSEWORM, AOS, CAUSTIC THOUGHT) met up with drummer Steve Flynn (ATHEIST). Timing, it seems, is everything. Flynn was a founding member of the now "Legendary" prog metal pioneers "Atheist", and parted ways with the band in 1992, but it wasn't until December of 2004 that Flynn decided he wanted to get back into playing seriously, and began searching for musicians in Atlanta. Flynn put out a message on Atlantamusican.com that briefly outlined his experience and said he was looking to form a band with like-minded musicians based in the area.

While Atlanta is a major metropolitan area, rife with numerous musicians, it is always an exceptionally difficult task ? mixed with a bit of luck ? to find players that are not only talented but share common interests. Carson and Morley, well known musicians and long-time residents of Atlanta, recognized Flynn's name from his work in Atheist and, the three musicians met for lunch, hit it off immediately. After just a few sessions it was evident to the then three-piece act that they had real potential and wanted to continue to take the band wherever it would lead them.

They began to write songs immediately. Once they put the first song together they realized that their different styles and influences meshed together perfectly. The next key ingredient to help bring it all together was, obviously, vocals. Holding true to their common death-metal roots, the band wanted somebody that could bring brutally heavy vocals to the table yet mix it with a touch of tone and originality. The band found that rare combination in singer Kevin Freeman (ENDERS GAME, AOS, CAUSTIC THOUGHT).

Gnostic then recruited accomplished guitarist Todd Simpson (Also previously with Caustic Thought) to help put the finishing touches on the music, adding depth, harmonies, and leads to compliment Carson's. The band then decided on the moniker "Gnostic" in July 2005 and began to take things to the next level.

When the music was refined to a point that it was ready to be heard, Flynn let the cat out of the bag, so to speak, to his oldest friend - and co-founder of Atheist - Kelly Shaefer. Since disbanding Atheist, Shaefer had gone on to great success with his band Neurotica - climaxing with a slot on 2002's Ozzfest Tour - and is currently juggling 2 bands Big Machine and Unheard. Shaefer, wanting to leverage his accumulated, extensive music industry experience to help bring new and exciting acts to the forefront, founded Starrfactory Records. Upon hearing a Gnostic rehearsal recording, Shaefer said he wanted to represent Gnostic, and help the band produce its first demo recording. Shaefer flew up to Atlanta, and went into LedBelly Sound Studios, with "Gnostic" to attend the sessions and lend his considerable experience to the effort. The bands hard work and Shaefer's insight proved to mesh well and the result is "Splinters of Change," the band's first, 5-song demo.

In January of 2006, Gnostic announced a lineup adjustment: long-time acquaintance Chris Baker (ex-Ghost Story) replaces Todd Simpson on guitar. Baker now shares guitar duties with original guitarist Sonny Carson to shape a tighter, thicker sound and a heavier overall mix. "We want to advance the style, increase the scope, and weave more intricate guitar lines throughout." says Baker, adding, "Gnostic remains good friends with Todd, and we all wish him the best."

Gnostic and Starrfactory Records are currently working to secure a record deal for the band. In the meantime, Gnostic will be playing live at a venue near you and continuing to write new material.
