Biography

Genre defying Brooklyn outfit created during 1992, delightfully named after the Brazilian fish that has a predilection for swimming up urine streams and lodging itself by means of retractable spines inside the penis, that effortlessly blend extreme Thrash and Hardcore Metal with Jazz Dance beats and fusion. CANDIRIA's inaugural line-up comprised of frontman Carley Coma, guitarists Chris Puma and Eric Matthews, bassist Mike Holt and drummer Kenneth Schalk.

The band debuted with the 'Subliminal' demo after which Holt made his exit. Two bassists in quick succession came and went, 'Eric' and 'Jimmy', before CANDIRIA resolved to persevere minus a bassist. CANDIRIA's first commercially available product would be the 7" EP 'Deep In The Mental' issued by Devastating Soundworks during 1995. Both single tracks 'Temple Of Sickness' and 'Elevate In Madness' would appear on the debut Too Damn Hype album 'Surrealistic Madness'. This album would witness a number of re-issues with differing artwork. The third such re-release also came with a different track listing skipping 'Infected Wisdom' and the instrumental 'Observing Highways' in favour of 'Purity Condemned' taken from the 'Subliminal' demo.

The sophomore 'Beyond Reasonable Doubt' album would witness lyrical and vocal contributions from Mark Scondotto of SHUTDOWN on lead track 'Faction' and the same degree of benevolence from MERAUDER's Jorge Rosado on the track 'Year One' and CUTTHROATS' Ryan Murphy on 'Tribes'. CANDIRIA also contributed 'Pull' featuring Tom of INDECISION and 'Statistics' to the 'New York's Hardest: Volume II' compilation album. At this stage CANDIRIA were still without a bassist.

Puma would leave to be supplanted by DEAD AIR's John Lamacchia. Shortly after another DEAD AIR member, Mike MacIvor, after a short spell with MERAUDER, joined the fold to complete the band. CANDIRIA's third album 'Process Of Self Development' would feature a further slew of guest artists including Jamey Jasta of HATEBREED, Paul of DISSOLVE, Phil of IRATE and Jorge Rosado once again.

Unfortunately CANDIRIA's tour plans for 2000, on a package billing with MADBALL and SHADOWS FALL, were scuppered when projected road partners MADBALL decided to fold.

May of 2001 would see the release of CANDIRIA's '300 Percent Density' record for the German Century Media label. The band would also be slated to play at the gargantuan extreme Metal 'Beast Feast' festival in Yokohama, Japan during August. CANDIRIA hooked up with BIOHAZARD and CLUTCH for a November package tour of the States during November. Touring the UK in late January 2002 would find the band packaged once again with CLUTCH and also RAGING SPEEDHORN.

CANDIRIA members, in keeping with their adventurous nature, would also be operational with the Jazz improvisational side endeavour GHOSTS OF THE CANAL releasing the 1999 EP 'Sessions From The Flats'. Meantime, the band would re-issue their 1997 album 'Beyond Reasonable Doubt' via their own label C.O.M.A. label in May. Re-titled 'C.O.M.A. Imprint', the re-release came as a double disc set, with the second CD featuring tracks from the band members assorted side projects.

Promoting new album 'The Coma Imprint', released on their own Lakeshore Entertainment imprint, CANDIRIA's June 2002 North American headline dates found 36 CRAZYFISTS as opening act. Further shows projected with 40 BELOW SUMMER were scuppered when the band, travelling to a gig in Cleveland, Ohio on 9th September, suffered a serious auto accident in which a tractor trailer rear ended their van outside Buffalo, New York in September. Both John LaMacchia and Carley Coma sustained injuries. This event would put CANDIRIA out of action for nearly two years as the musicians recuperated.

CANDIRIA got back onto the road in July of 2004 for US dates packaged with KITTIE, 36 CRAZYFISTS and TWELVE TRIBES. September / October US dates had the band uniting with SHADOWS FALL, ALL THAT REMAINS and FULL BLOWN CHAOS. Soon back out on the road again, the band was scheduled in for 'We Salute You' tour commencing 9th November also featuring ILL NINO, FLAW, 40 BELOW SUMMER and DROWNING POOL. The band underwent a major line up change in early December, introducing new guitarists Darren Carter (a.k.a DC11) and Steve Fakelman, formerly of the TRUDGE, debuting their new personnel with gigs allied with NONPOINT and DRY KILL LOGIC. Road work continued into 2004, the group uniting with AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE, BLOODSIMPLE and OTEP for the 'Alliance of Defiance' tour commencing in late February. That same month the group revealed they had signed to pioneering UK record label Earache.

In April 2005 it was reported that CANDIRIA had been awarded a massive $29 million as compensation for the band's September 2002 accident.
