Does anyone know about the rumours that Edguy will be playing Wacken? Someone told me that Edguy will be there, although I'm not quite sure if this is true. Would be awesome though.
Any sources for that claim? |
|
|
|
Well Edguy or not, even though I like them I think I'll just not risk losing a good space and stick with Running Wild.
I've finally had a good look at the running order and have made a plan for myself. If things go according to plan, I should be seeing these bands:
Thursday
Schandmaul
Anthrax
Running Wild
Heaven & Hell
Friday
Gamma Ray
Nevermore
Dragonforce
Hammerfall
Whiplash
Motörhead
In Flames
Doro
Amon Amarth
Saturday
Einherjer
Rage
Kampfar
Testament
Borknagar
Axel Rudi Pell
In Extremo
Enslaved
Saxon
Korpiklaani
Subway To Sally |
|
|
|
Btw, don't forget your trunks. Wacken also means free entry to the swimming pool, so you even got some program when you get up early (and you most likely will if the weather is hot). It also means free showers and proper toilets while you would have to pay for both if you stayed at the campground. And don't believe the Wacken audience just goes to the swimming pool for swimming - last year they even had a circle pit and some walls of death
And my plan will most likely look something like this:
Wednesday
Metal Storm meeting
Fejd
Watching Vale making a fool of himself
Thursday
Anthrax
Running Wild
Heaven & Hell
Friday
Vreid OR Suidakra
Tristania
Nevermore
DragonForce
Motörhead
Epica OR In Flames
Amon Amarth OR ASP
Saturday
Einherjer
Rage
Cathedral OR Kampfar
Testament
Borknagar OR Heaven Shall Burn
Adorned Brood
In Extremo
Volbeat
Enslaved
Gwar
Subway To Sally (mostly because I expect Stefan Raab as special guest) |
|
|
|
Oh yes, Subway To Sally is there. I totally missed them, I'll try and see them too.
So where is the swimming pool? I've never actually been there strangely. |

Here. If you zoom out, you'll see a building with a red roof on Schenefelder Street. That's the big supermarket at the beginning of Wacken, next to it (the small black cube) the point where you get your press pass. |

That's not what the PDF of our press confirmations say for the check-in. From what I've found the press check-in this year has moved to the corner of Reselithweg and Am Twisselburg.
Here. |

|
|
| In that case I was talking about last year. Didn't know they moved. Good to know though. |
|
|

The agreement for free swimming was cancelled last year. They charge everyone 2€ now. So free showers and all is off |

| Just remember there are two beer gardens so make sure you know which one you are meeting at looking at the PDF's. |

Dear Metalheads
Unfortunately, we have to inform you that despite the effort, Anthrax will not perform with John Bush at W:O:A. Due to this occasion minor adjustments regarding the running order have to be made. HEAVEN AND HELL will perform on the True Metal Stage subsequent to the Metal Hammer Awards. There will be a Secret Show on the Party-Stage at 6.00h pm followed by The Boss Hoss and Lacuna Coil. On Wednesday, 7.00h pm, an additional secret Show on the WET-Stage. Be curious who it is going to be.
Your
team W:O:A
There it is. |

So which one are we meeting at? Still 7pm on Wed night?
Last day at work today until 12 August and the day is f**king dragging!!! I can't wait to get out of here! |

Well guys, It was a blast. I honestly had one of my best WOA's ever. And now I have a face on you people. It was a fun night meeting you all, even though I had to take off early (sorry again for that).
In a whole I've seen 27 bands this year and apart from passing out during the Nevermore show (a combination of a huge sunstroke and a crowdsurfer to the head, but I'm fine thank you. Been out like 5 minutes and then it was time for Dragonforce ) and a few sound problems they had at the party stage (Tristania anyone? Promonex?) the whole thing was just amazing. The Enslaved set last night was one of the most beautiful shows I've ever seen. Quote Grutle: "How many Vikings does it need to change a lightbulb? 1001. One to change the lightbulb and 1000 to invade England"
Now I need to recover from the weekend, get my voice back (I actually only have one pitch left) and unfortunately buff out a few new scratches my car recieved by certain alcohol-influenced subjects...
Looking forward to next year! |

Amen to about everything you said. Except the passing out part. I only lost my earplugs in Nevermore's circle pit, but at least we didn't have any crowdsurfers. And I only managed to catch like 15 bands, and I'm glad Enslaved were one of them as they were absolutely divine! On a scale from 1 to 10 they'd get a 12 for scaring the shit out of me and lifting me up to total euphoria in a matter of split seconds. A show I will remember for quite a while and overall an awesome festival I won't forget that early either. See you next year, I suppose! Wednesday, 7 p.m., at the fountain of the beer garden |

You bet! Already ordered my Ticket. And seens as Immortal is confirmed for next year already, I have a feeling we'll get another chance of making the very best of a festival that is slowly going down the drain. |

Hahaha, I lost my hat in the Nevermore set!! Seems everyone lost something during that set.. consciousness, earplugs, hat...

Right...am finally back home in London after laying on the beach in Barcelona for 5 days recovering from Wacken. Had the most amazing time at Wacken this year and it was really cool to meet you guys (sorry I didnt stay long though).
I was in camp ground B - awesome location, close to everything except one very important thing....toilets! By Friday morning I was very f*cking sick of sleeping in a tent, but have to say I got more sleep than I thought I would. The 300 euro I spent on alcohol might have had something to do with that though. This was my 2nd Wacken and I plan on going to as many as possible! Highlights for me were Heaven and Hell, Motorhead, Machine Head, Nevermore, Saxon, and Testament AND I got on the Jager Perch Bar! Will load some photos soon. Missed out on the 2010 xmas tickets though |

Did anyone see Rezet? I wonder how they came across live.
I am really enjoying their brand of retro thrash (what I've heard of their upcoming album, that is) |

They played on the part of the metal market you actually had to pay for to enter. I suppose there were some more showcases, strip shows and stuff, but I couldn't be bothered as there was more than enough action on the rest of the festival/camping area. |

You're kidding right? A part of the metal market you had to pay for to enter? Wacken must be the only festival in the world that does that... this really officially does make the Wacken organisation sell-out corporate whores. They really aren't into the music at all it seems they are just out to make as much money as possible (which they don't even use to get a great line-up together) |

Hehe, there we go again. Although in this regard I do agree with you. They've been doing that for as long as I've been going there. You have to pay 2,-€ to get in, recieve a cheap paper wristband and inside there's nothing more than more merchandisers to sell stuff and said mini stage no one ever cares about.
That aside, the fact that the WOA isn't exactly a non-profit organisation is not really a secret. You should see their german forum and all the people whining about it. But you can't satisfy anyone and forums do have a tendency to attract whiners. Whether you take part in all that commercial crap is then again your own choice. As long as they continue to offer the x-mas ticket for 20,- less every year I don't exactly have anything to complain about (though I did, long and detailed - in their forum ). You can still use the festival to discover new bands or see ones you wouldn't attend a regular show of. Show me another place where I can see 27 bands for 109,-€. |

I meant that as "show me a place that is not a festival". And no festival is cheaper than the woa for me because I live no 50 km away from Wacken. Wherever else I go, I pay shitloads of extra money for fuel. Aaaaand I'm a university student which should speak for my monetary situation itself. |

Okay, I misinterpreted that part apparently. It is true one has to go to a festival to see that amount of bands for such a sum of money.
Btw, I have nothing agaianst people attending Wacken, what I can't stand about Wacken though is it's blatant down and out commercialism and people making it out to be the ultimate heaven for every metal fan, whereas not any festival is the ultimate for metalfans cause of the difference in preference in the sort of metal one listens to.
And what really annoys me is that most metallers nowadays think that Wacken was the first truly all metalfest on mainland Europe (or even the world according to some) where in fact a certain festival which started in Eindhoven (but now has collapsed unfortunately) predates Wacken by about 4 years. Even Waldrock predates Wacken by a couple of years (and they are still going strong and haven't missed an edition since their first one)
Btw Monsters of Rock at Castle Donnington even predates the Eindhoven one. |

For a man in his 40's, you do care a lot about other people's thoughts and feelings. And you generalize a lot. From my experience (I'm 25 btw) a lot of the people you describe are from 14 to 18 years of age and just collect their first impressions of the metal world. I remember a time when I didn't even know there were other metal festivals than the WOA. Granted that's about 10 years ago, but I wouldn't have liked being judged by anyone like that back then. Unfortunately many people (I speak for Germany here) are attracted to metal because of it's esoteric reputation rather than a true interest in the music. For some people that may change. But I can't tell you how many guys I met, ranging from 15 to over 30 that told me they liked metal and when it came down to the facts there was only Lacuna Coil, Evanscence and Nightwish on the female and Amon Amarth, Soulfly/KoRn or <insert random *core band> on the male side. And the rest was textbook cliché. In fact I meet these people everyday. In subway trains, restaurants, parties, on campus, hell I even befriend a few of these guys. But I've come to an agreement with myself that I just listen to music for different reasons and should not worry about their motivation any more than I do about my own (I don't, which is the cool thing about it). And I certainly won't let these kids ruin anything for me I'd otherwise enjoy. And, be it as commercial as could be, that also includes the WOA. I have greater problems with a subgroup of the aforementioned that brings aggression and brutality to a festival. That is what will keep me from going to Wacken one day. Everything else remains my own choice. |

You mean to say Wacken attracts people who attend it just so they can fuck about in an aggressive manner? Thereby spoling it all for the other people? Now that is incredibly sad. A festival should of course be a gathering for like-minded people and not a ventialation for aggression. Those agressive idiots do they really consider themselves metalheads? My God what is this world coming to when one goes to a festival (or any other concert) just to fight and be aggressive and spoil other people's fun. |

Yep, that's what I mean to say. But that phenomenon is not limited to the WOA, I've seen it on many concerts too. The younger the audience, the more of an identity crisis they seem to have and the more they seen to think enjoying a concert is cooler when you regardlessly mosh instead of listening or even just headbanging. I'm not that much of a fan of body contact with strangers, especially if it's violent contact but it's getting increasingly hard to find a good spot in the audience on a concert without these people around. Or maybe I'm listening to the wrong bands. But looking at close to 8 years of concert experience I assert that it's the people who change. A couple of years ago I've seen Nevermore in Hamburg and the concert was so intimate that everyone in the room seemed to feel the same feelings. At that day, Dew Scented was one of the openers and they repeatedly tried to get people to form a moshpit but nobody wanted to. They were there to enjoy the music, each guy for himself but still all of them together.
Nowadays, on a Nevermore (or even an Opeth) concert you have at least a fifth of the people moshing and making the area right in front of the stage unbearable for the rest of the audience. And I can't even tell you about the appearance of Amon Amarth at the WOA. And as much as I hate to say it, great part of the Nevermore show were destroyed for me too. Not only because one guy knocked me unconscious, but through the whole show we were more preoccupied with surviving the crowd we were in than acutally enjoying the music. |
|
|
|
| I guess you just have to pick the right area to stand as well. People don't tend to try and start moshpits at the sides. You can usually get much closer to the front going from the sides as well. |
