Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

Location: Germany, Wacken (Festivalgelände)
Date: 29 July 2009 - 01 August 2009
Website: wacken.com
Organizer: ICS Event Service

Tickets:

SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

D-A-D played in Wacken in 1995. That's probably why they are invited back. No they are not metal, but they do play rock of some sort.

Some of you are very hard to satisfy. You ask for big bands, but at the same time you complain that they only hire mainstream bands.

And as someone said, you have to buy your ticket early if you want to make sure you can go to wacken. It is indeed very easy to sell your wacken ticket, so I don't see the problem in buying it before all bands are confirmed.

I can't believe how many people keep bitching about wacken not being cool anymore etc. If you don't like the lineup, don't buy the ticket, if you already bought your ticket, sell it. It's not really that hard guys. Do you complain about all not-cool concerts or festivals?? No, you just don't go.

I hear you man, it's become quite popular to complain about Wacken. Even on their own forum. But it's also a fact that the Wacken Team announced huge specials for this year and instead ended up organizing three "Wacken Rocks" festivals, putting much more energy into those than the original WOA itself. So even though I consider myself a little fan of this festival it's getting increasingly hard to look forward to this lineup. Not the festival itself, as long as the people are cool, it will rock. But if you're used to enjoying 20-25 bands on a festival and suddenly find yourself being interested in just about 10 in one year you'd have to agree that there's something wrong about that
I for once decided to stop complaining and will just look forward to what's announced next. And if there's nothing, we'll find other ways to cope

I have no problem with big mainstream names at all...my problem with D-A-D is that they as you also say aren't metal at all. But their concerts are still great so I'll probably end up seeing them anyway

Didn't you listen to their latest album?

If people boo BFMV they might as well boo Children Of Bodom.

If A7X didn't get boo'd last year I think BFMV will be fine.

Each year this festival seems to be getting a little more "meh". Like, 5 years ago or so the idea of seeing bands like Bohse Onkelz along with a shitload of other I'd never see made me salivate, now I look at this bill and it just seems like the line-ups are getting weaker. Most of that bands on that list I'm interested in I've already seen. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I actually like the lineup. There are quite a few bands I would like to see

yeah me too, people all say "oh noez europeans can see Hammerfall and Saxon 3x a year GIMME MY MONEY BACK!!!" but i personally haven't seen ANY band on the list. should be quite fun considering i'm really interested in about 9-10 bands out of the list and the rest i wouldn't at all mind seeing.

sure the line-up isn't as good as it could have been but still there's the people, the booze, the strip girls, the medieval role-play thing

if UDO or WASP were also announced it should make for one of the best possible festivals i could attend this year.

i'm not 100% sure i'll be able to go damn overpriced airlines. transport should cost me about 170 fucking euros(which is a lot), but it's the price to pay to see bands that stay away from romania like swine flu such as Hammerfall, Heaven and Hell or Saxon.

U.D.O. is quite likely actually. On Udo's site it says that he gonna perform at Wacken. So it's either gonna be U.D.O. or Accept.

Accept would be incredible, but sadly they disbanded 3-4 years ago still, UDO would make for quite a show(and the only way to hear Accept's stuff live)

EDIT Where the hell does it say? http://www.udo-online.de/ i only found this:

09-03-05
Wacken - YES or NO
The situation will be clarified at the moment and we publish the decision as soon as possible. Be patient, please!

that's not a yes

edit #1 but no problem, i just asked UDO about it

edit #2 they're not gonna play

OKay one more time...

Thin Lizzt without Phil Lynnott is NOT Thin Lizzy. Phil defined Thin Lizzy's sound and was the singular most important member of the band.

You really do keep looking for things to bitch about don't you? OK, you don't like the woa and you certainly won't go there in 2009. We get it. Why bother to even follow this thread then? I'd be pathetic to try and ruin it for other people. And you'll most likely fail with that anyway.

I would also have compained about Trouble or Thin Lizzy being added to Hellfest. Why I keep following it? I actually truly hope for the people that have already bought a ticket that something truly headline worthwhile and special will be added and not just all those secodn and third tier bands that have been confirmed up till. I actually hope that those people will finally get their money's worth. But if people atually think that the current line-up is worth the money it just confirms my suspicions about 99% of all metallers being part of a herd and just go to fit in with more of the same people.

You have to work up a certain repertoire to be able to have this view on the scene. I've used the woa to get to know new bands for years. Of course from today's point of view I agree with most that has already been said here but I wouldn't know half these bands if I hadn't followed the woa's lineup for the last five years, listening to bands before seeing them on stage. Don't be too hard on the newcomers, they will find their way. I don't think you were as educated about metal as you are now when you were around 20 years of age. Hell, six years ago HammerFall would have been the high point of the whole festival for me. But you need time and lots of input and impulse to find out about the whole thing. I'm worrying more about these kid's attitude than their musical taste. The latter doesn't affect my festival experience as much as the frequent aggressiveness that these kids come with.

99% of metal fans part of a herd? sorry but that's waay off the charts. i know there's few of us, but some of us actually don't care that the line-up is shit compared to the last years and would still go to see even these bands(imo the only bands that can save it are Maiden, Priest or Metallica or something, but neither of them are available to play then) surprisingly, the line-up is pretty good from my point of view with 9 bands i really want to see(in order of interest with Hammerfall being first): Hammerfall(even though their last 2 albums are very poor), Saxon, Amon Amarth, Motorhead, Turisas, Heaven and Hell, Nevermore, Testament, Epica. that's 9 bands whose ticket would cost at least 15 euros(gross understatement so you can see my point) to see separately. 9 x 15 = 135 which is slightly more than the 130 euro ticket price, so i don't feel like i'm cheated at all. instead i AM cheated by the goddam airline and train companies, air travel from Bucharest to Berlin is 100 euros, and from Bucharest to Hamburg it's 200.

but yeah, the people who bought their tickets expecting some ultra-kvlt bands no-one ever gets to see, they got fucked. still, there's a good amount of fun to be had there and there's always next year(which looks pretty promising, Maiden will be back on tour, Slayer too, Megadeth, etc)

It's a little OT, but if they charge you an extra 100 ? to fly directly to Hamburg, there's a bus line that will take you from Berlin to Hamburg for about ~20?. If you book early enough it's even only 9,50.
But yeah, that's what I forgot to say in my last post. For me it also looks pretty good this time. Granted there have been better years, but that was mainly because bands were playing that had never played before (Avantasia) or not for long time (Emperor) which made the whole festival a very special experience for me. This year is more of a regular lineup, but still a good one:

Nevermore, Enslaved, Tristania, Borknagar, Gamma Ray, Amon Amarth, Machine Head, Saxon, Rage, Napalm Death, Motörhead, Axel Rudi Pell, Hammerfall, DragonForce

In a rough order from most to least interested. And there might probably come a few more.

NEVER EVER compare festival prices with separate concert prices! There are so goddamn many differences, in sound quality, in atmosphere, in freedom of the artists (set lengths), in the composition of the audience (dedicated fans instead of curious bystanders), etc.; festivals aren't a sum of separate concerts, festivals are like a music maniac's fun fair where you can catch a short glimpse of bands that might interest you, but never to such extent and quality as you could expect in a more intimate location (the exception proves the rule). Just read our review about Negură Bunget's performance at last year's Wacken and you'll know what I mean.

Yeh, there really aren't many bands that give a better experience at a festival than an individual show. Only maybe Iron Maiden and Blind Guardian I can think of right now..

I don't feel like I've wasted my money that's for sure. There are a lot of bands that I haven't seen before and would like to see, so I don't mind the lineup. The crap bands just give me a change to go to the beer garden and get drunk
