Charon - Calling It Quits This Summer

Finnish suomi metal band Charon are calling it a day after this summer's performances. The band, founded in 1992 in Raahe, Finland, will be playing their final gigs as a favour to their loyal fans and finally wrap up nearly two decades of music career.

A statement from the band explaining their long considered decision, reads as follows: "This shouldn't be a really big surprise for anyone. We are forced to admit that we have no longer anything new to give to the genre in which Charon has operated. Doing things forced or not straight from the heart has never been a band practice for us. And a 100 % satisfactory outcome would no longer be possible.

Charon - Band Update

Finnish metallers Charon have issued the following update on their MySpace blog:

"New decade brings changes to Charon and now it's good time to update the situation. There have been rumours among Charon fans and followers about the future of the band. Playfully it could be said that Charon was not able to escape the cold grip of ongoing recession and had to go through re-organization and layoffs.

After taking some time out last summer we were not able to tune our engine to the needed pace for the studio sessions. We had written a bunch of new songs during the last couple of years but were not able to put them on record. After a long pondering and going through different alternatives, it was inevitable that we cannot output the next album in this mood of confusion. As a consequence guitarist Pasi Sipilä has left Charon.

Charon will continue playing and writing songs as a quartet. At the moment we are looking forward to new working methods and finding new ways to surprise our fans and to challenge bandmates with no boundaries on style or sound. We would like to thank Pasi for all his work for Charon during the years and wish him good luck with music!

We were glad to notice on our November gig that fans still believe in our work. It really kicks us forward and gives us a reason to continue. Hopefully we will meet again soon!

We wish all our fans and friends great and interesting new year 2010! Charon will be entering the studio in March to record couple of new songs. Brand-new track will be released in March at our website in free internet dowload!"

(Also thanks to MaSTeMa)

Charon - Will Resume Writing New Material In August

Charon have issued the following update:

"We have together decided to take some time out from song writing and album production. As from today we are taking a two-month break from Charon to keep things meaningful and to search for relaxation and less stressed creative inspiration. We will continue writing songs in August when we will think through our working methods and scan for potential partners. A small break after 15 years of hard work gives all of us a great possibility to do other things and look at things from a distance.

After the release of "Songs for the Sinners", the last album for Spinefarm, we played intensively around Finland and Europe for two years. After extensive touring we have worked countless hours to make the next and the best Charon album ever. The last two years have gone by really fast and at the same time emerging writer's block has not made it easy for us. Lately we have felt that we have lost the ability to write great songs and playing has become forced. We want to be honest in all our work to ourselves and to our fans - and to make an album that we can stand behind. We will not settle for anything less. In addition, personal reasons and other music projects have had their influence on the pace of working.

During the break Charon will not play any shows in Finland or elsewhere. Playing the same setlist all over again has been a burden to us since we want to offer our fans the best experience on shows as well. We will return to the stage 8 August in Raahe, Finland and 4 September at the AngraRock festival in the Azores, Portugal."

Charon - Recording New Album!

Charon will begin recording their new, yet unnamed, album in 14 Feb 2005. They will be heading to the legendary Finnvox Studios in Helsinki with renowned producer Mikko Karmila. Recording sessions will continue until mid-March, after which Karmila will mix the album. The first single will be released in April, and the entire album is slated to be released in August.

New songs, 13 pieces altogether, are versatile, more live-oriented and dark-toned than earlier Charon material. There are many new elements in the music, just because of a new guitarist, and using a producer in a different studio setup.

Charon will tour in Finland to promote the album in the autumn. However, the band can be seen on stage on summer festivals as well. The next scheduled gigs are at the end of May in Helsinki, Tampere and Oulu.

Charon will keep you posted on any news and information while in the studio. They will be updating a studio diary on the website periodically with news and pictures.

Charon Name New Guitarist

Finnish goth-metallers CHARON have selected FOR MY PAIN? guitarist Lauri Tuohimaa as the permanent replacement for of Jasse Von Hast, who left the group last November. Tuohimaa has spent the last few months playing with CHARON as a session guitarist during their winter live dates.

CHARON have several gigs lined up in Finland during the spring/summer, including appearances at the Tuska, Nummirock and Qstock festivals. The band plan on entering the studio later this year to begin recording the follow-up to last year's "The Dying Daylights", tentatively due in early 2005 through Spinefarm Records.

Charon - Announcement.

This announcement was posted on the Official homepage by the founding member Antti Karihtala in the beginning of December:

One chapter has ended in the story of Charon, and it is time to move on. As one of the founding members of the band I feel entitled, if not obligated, to explain and update Charon's present situation publicly from my own point of view.

I have always been glad and proud about the fact that Charon is one of the longest bands playing with the original line-up in the heavier rock
genre both in and outside Finland. Over 11 years of work with the same members is an achievement for any band.

This period of time has given the band both it's present day face and it's unrelenting character.

Now, however, the time has come to make some difficult choices in order to keep the group going.

When I started the band with Teemu Hautamäki and Pasi Sipilä in spring 1992, I didn't even consider the possibility of parting ways with someone. There was a healthy fear of and respect for the band activities, which meant you either go all out for the band or you don't go at all. This attitude has not changed?

Playing in a band is not a given; you have to invest in it 200%, at least in Charon. People, however, change as life goes on, and so do the members' values. Personally, I've had to make some very difficult choices and have given up a lot for the good of the band, but I've also learnt to arrange things in a way that won't hurt the band. In a way,
this has been easy, because playing in the band with your best friends sets the priorities for other things as well. This attitude has also been visible in the rest of the band.

But, as Jasse said in his announcement, he has 'lost all interest in the band'. This has been clear in his attitude for some time now, and we felt that it could not possibly go on. His general lack of motivation and interest was visible in the spring and all through summer, and it was clearly starting to affect the rest of us, and so we had only one
alternative. No sports team will field an out-of-shape player; he will be replaced with someone who has the right attitude.

If personal chemistry doesn't work, it shows in concerts, on the albums, in the tour bus, rehearsals etc. It's just a shame this time of troubles coincides with the recording of a new album, which is, after all, the most creative time in a band's life. Also, the prospect of finding a session guitarist on such a short notice and in the middle of a tour, didn't seem very appealing. But, as they say, a rock band works best with a gun to their head? And it's true!

Charon - The Reason Jasse Left, in English.

Now the english translation of the reason why Jasse von Hast left Charon:

Time to move on

After long consideration and prioritizing, I have come to a point where it is time for me to put a phase in my life behind me. I feel that Charon has nothing more to give me, musically or otherwise, and my interest in the band has faded completely.

During the last year, I have simply had enough of all that.

At the moment, I'm concentrating on my day job.

I will continue with music in the future, and I'm constantly writing new material. In which context it will be used remains to be seen.

I want to thank all our fans and supporters for great years with the band.

Charon - Jasse left the band.

Charon's guitarist and songwriter have announced that he left the band.

More of this later... there is no English translation yet, but this is the reason, in Finnish:

Aikansa kutakin

Pitkän pohdinnan ja asioiden prioriteettien seurauksena olen tullut siihen pisteeseen, että on aika jättää yksi vaihe elämässäni taakse. Charonilla ei ole minulle enää mitään annettavaa musiikillisesti eikä muutenkaan, mielenkiintoni kyseistä kokoonpanoa kohtaan on hävinnyt täysin.

Viimeisen vuoden aikana olen yksinkertaisesti saanut totaalisesti tarpeekseni siitä kaikesta.

Tällä hetkellä keskityn leipätyöhöni.

Tulen kuitenkin jatkamaan musiikin parissa jatkossakin ja kirjoitan uutta materiaalia koko ajan. Se missä yhteyksissä sitä mahdollisesti tullaan
jatkossa käyttämään, jääköön tässä vaiheessa tulevaisuuden näytettäväksi.

Kiitos kaikille faneille ja tukijoille näistä vuosista.
