Devin Townsend - Album Artwork Revealed

Devin Townsend has just revealed the cover artwork for the upcoming album Ghost.

Devin previously stated about the Ghost art: "The macro shot was influenced by some shots someone on Twitter showed me. But a great photographer named Brian Kibbons did the whole album, and Travis Smith (Nevermore, Opeth) did the layout."

According to Devin, "Ghost is the mellowest (by far) and prettiest record I've done so far" with a "very wonderful vibe." It will be released with "the shitstorm that is Deconstruction simultaneously" ? probably in June through InsideOut Music.

Commented Heavy Devy: "Here's an out-take from the Ghost sessions. Please enjoy, it's not as much of a 'song' as it is a 'vibe'..."

Ihsahn - Guest Vocalist On Upcoming Devin Townsend Album

Ihsahn - black metal innovator and all round creative genius - will be doing some guest vocals on the new Devin Townsend album, entitled Decontruction.

The ex-Emperor main-man had the following to say: "I have been a long time fan of Devin and his work, and when he asked me to do some vocals for his upcoming Deconstruction album, I said yes right away. Devin is one of those few uncompromising artists who goes anywhere with their music, wherever that takes them. Nothing but respect!"

In other news, Ihsahn will play at the Kabuto Metal Festival in Japan this spring for the first time ever. Accompanied with the guys in Leprous, they will play Namba Hatch in Osaka on May 21 and May 22 at Studio Coast in Tokyo.

"This will be my first trip to Japan, and I am really looking forward to this experience. I have heard nothing but praise of the country itself, the festivals and last but not least the audience from bands who played there", Ihsahn says.

Devin Townsend - Taps Jens Bogren For Album Mix

Canadian musician/producer Devin Townsend has tapped Jens Bogren (Opeth, Paradise Lost, Bloodbath etc.) to mix Deconstruction ? the third in a series of albums to be made available under The Devin Townsend Project moniker. The sessions will take place in late February 2011 at Fascination Street studio in Örebro, Sweden.

In a November update Townsend had the following to say about Deconstruction: "There are 2 drummers on this one, Ryan Van Poederooyen (The Devin Townsend Band) for the crushing stuff, and Dirk Verbueren (Soilwork, Scarve), Aborted) for the inhuman stuff. This is a record I have been working up to for some time, and while doing it, I realize that not only am I in control of it (totally) but that this newfound control allows me to take it to places I would have never been able to a decade ago. I pretty much believe that this will be one of our finest hours, and although there is some funny moments, it's a pretty 'pointed' record (if ya know what I mean)..."

According to Devin "Ghost is the mellowest (by far) and prettiest record I've done so far" with a "very wonderful vibe." It will be released with "the shitstorm that is Deconstruction simultaneously" ? possibly in early April 2011.

Devin Townsend - European Tour Announced

After announcing 6 UK dates for coming March 2011 already, The Devin Townsend Project now announces a full blown European tour which will see the band playing 25 shows in 13 different countries.

Mr Townsend, being hard at work to put the final touches to the upcoming albums Ghost and Deconstruction (both tentatively scheduled for a May release), commented: "After another busy, busy, year, we have set ourselves up for an even busier one... and to be honest, I wouldn't have it any other way. I have just recently finished Ghost (record 4, the mellow one) and am currently up to my balls in Deconstruction (record 3, the heavy one... for which we are using the Prague Symphony Orchestra to make more ridiculous than it really needs to be ) and I've yet to get my goddamn garage cleaned, so yeah... things are busy. I love it.

So I'd like to announce a European tour... it will be the first tour of many we are doing in 2011 and it starts March 3rd in the UK. It hits a bunch of spots in Europe, including some places I've never played but have always wanted to. I'm really, really, excited to play again, and we will bring new music as well as some special acoustic performances. The people who support it have been so gracious that it's a real pleasure to announce this. See you next year guys! I'll bring my gnarliest teeth and lumpiest head!"

The band is set to perform a mixture of tracks from all four DTP albums and the Dutch and Finns will get a real treat as long time friend and main guest vocalist on 2009´s Addicted record, Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering) will be joining the band on the last four dates of the tour to share vocal duties with Devin. Tickets will go on sale coming Friday, December 10th.

March 03 - The Brook, Southampton, United Kingdom
March 04 - The Fleece, Bristol, United Kingdom
March 05 - Rock City, Nottingham, United Kingdom
March 06 - Academy 2, Manchester, United Kingdom
March 07 - Garage, Glasgow, United Kingdom

Devin Townsend - Announce First Ever Solo Headlining Tour

Official press release

One of metal's most intriguing, ominous and immensely talented figures, the mighty Devin Townsend, is extremely excited to announce that for the first time in his solo career he will be embarking on a headlining tour flyer]. This will be a special evening exploring a 15 year musical journey with Townsend performing songs spanning his entire vast catalog. Supporting acts will be announced soon along with East Coast shows, but see below or visit www.myspace.com/devintownsenddtb to view the initial headlining tour itinerary.

Special VIP Packages and Presale Tickets will be available for the tour. Please visit: https://tixx1.artistarena.com/devintownsend for more information.

Addicted was released in Nov. 2009 and has become his fastest selling solo record in his career. Townsend is currently working on two new albums for 2011. The new, mind-blowing offering, Addicted, was met with worldwide critical praise and scored very impressive first week numbers debuting at #168 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #2 on the Billboard Heatseakers chart.

Townsend further states: "Sitting here at the airport after months of preparation for the European festivals, getting this material ready to be heard the way it's meant to be heard has been a pretty mean task. Last night's epic rehearsal was one of those moments when you realize the work put into making it right results in an awesome sound. I have been given the opportunity now to bring this music to North America in my first ever solo headlining tour. It's not a huge tour, but I really would appreciate seeing some of the familiar faces and hopefully some new ones as well. It's cheesy to announce your touring plans as 'the biggest or best' of anything, but I love this music, we've worked really hard to get it right. If you're one of the folks that dig it, then this should be a great, heavy and fun time that sounds the way it should. I'm honored to be able to play for you after all these years. There's a ton of great tours coming up, and here is my contribution. Rock the fuck out, stay positive."

Check out some footage of Devin Townsend Project from their early 2010 tour with Between The Buried And Me/Cynic at this location.

Announced tour dates are as follows:

Oct. 08 - Vancouver, BC ? Richshaw Theater
Oct. 09 - Seattle, WA ? Studio Seven
Oct. 10 - Portland, OR ? Hawthorne Theater
Oct. 12 - San Francisco, CA ? Slim's
Oct. 14 - Hollywood, CA ? Key Club

Devin Townsend - To Release New Solo Material

On his MySpace page Devin Townsend (ex-Strapping Young Lad, ex-Devin Townsend Band) published a brief interview announcing a new solo album, "Ki".

Townsend commented: "Ki" is the first of 4 albums in a series of albums under the moniker 'Devin Townsend Project.' Each album is essentially a different "band" (or collection of session musicians) playing my music. They were chosen based on what the theme of the album is, and the vibe that the album is trying to project. The album "Ki" is very specific in this quartet of albums in that it controls its anger throughout the album barring one song (Heaven Send), and really is an exercise in having little to prove."

The whole interview can be read here. According to a message from Townsend on his forums, "Ki" will be released in late May or June. An album teaser can be found at this location.

Devin Townsend - Puts An End To Strapping Young Lad & The Devin Townsend Band

It has been reported that Devin Townsend has announced during a Ziltoid the Omniscient press conference that he has put an end to Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band, and that he shall do no more tours in the future. He will though apparently continue to release solo music.

"Yesterday InsideOut Music and the Tora! Company held an exclusive media showcase for the new Devin Townsend solo album Ziltoid The Omniscient, including an appearance and Q&A session with the man himself. This turned out to not in fact include a musical performance from Devin, but a hilarious puppet show using Devin's superb hand-made rubber Ziltoid puppet he uses in the videos on the Ziltoid MySpace page, and held a press conference from a booth on the stage of the Underworld in Camden, London.

Ziltoid took questions from the audience and during his answers he mentioned Devin would be moving into the mountains, never to be seen from again.

The audience thought it was part of the Ziltoid act, but after a while a tired looking Townsend emerged and confirmed that he is, indeed, quitting and moving to a remote town in Northern Canada.

He plans to continue to make "a ton of music", some of which will be heavy, some ambient, like his other new CD The Hummer, and everything in between. He's going to build a new studio at his new house, and will be keeping his studio in Vancouver where he produces other bands. So every now and again a Devin Townsend album will emerge, possibly on the internet, but he won't tour and won't be doing any other kind of public appearances, like interviews etc.

Eight months ago he and his wife had their first child, Reyner Liam Johnstan Townsend, and his arrival has accelerated Devin's decision to back away from the limelight, but is not the sole reason for it. He said these are feelings he's had for some time, and is just so tired of touring and doing interviews and being the focus of things. He also said he's tired of Strapping Young Lad. The last tour was a real struggle for him to muster any enthusiasm, mostly because SYL was initially created to vent all his frustrations, which no longer exist. He's not the angry early-twenties nutter anymore. He's a mellow mid-thirties nutter, and doesn't feel the need to be screaming at everyone.

So, Strapping Young Lad is over for good. So is the Devin Townsend Band. Devin's music will be made solo from now on, and he will continue to produce other peoples' music, but will not tour."

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid The Omniscient Samples Online

Devin Townsend has posted three tracks from his next solo album, entitled "Ziltoid the Omniscient", at the project's MySpace page. Check out the songs 'ZTO', 'By Your Command' and 'Hyperdrive' at this location.

The CD, which will be released under the Devin Townsend banner instead of The Devin Townsend Band, was recorded completely by Devin, who took care of the singing, guitar, bass, synthesizers and sampling duties, in addition to mixing and producing the album on his own. Devin has stated on the HevyDevy forums that he used "the drumkit from Hell" on this release ? the same kit that was previously utilized by Meshuggah on "Catch Thirty-Three" and which was developed by Meshuggah's Tomas Haake.

Check out the cover artwork at this location (art created by Travis Smith).

More info about the album here.
