Katatonia - Studio Update

Swedish metallers Katatonia have issued the following update on their MySpace blog:

"It's hard to believe, but it's a fact - the rathole sessions are over, we're done! David "King rat of the rathole" Castillo, Jonas and me have spent the longest studio sessions this far with nearly every hour of the day (or night) since we finished up with the vocals. Picture this: Mix down, reference listening, un-do, re-do, mix down, reference listening, repeat x 100. There's always something you find to correct, whether it's one drum hit that's not loud enough, or a backing harmony that doesn't cut through, or a frequency in the bass that makes the rathole sound like a steamboat, yeah basically hundreds of things that fight for their position and balance in the sound picture. One song even reached a staggering 136 (!) active tracks. That's quite a contrast to the days were we were given 16 tracks for the whole package. Everything has to be optimized and you end up going back and forth improving and updating versions of the mix to replace the previous efforts and you can do this for eternity, unless you have a deadline. We just managed to complete the mix at the very last day and let me tell you, the album sounds fan-fukkin-tastic! It's heavy, punchy and crunchy. It sounds very 3D in headphones. We put this album back to back with a couple of other band's albums and it is either right up there sideways with them, or it simply sits with it's azz on their faces. Crushed!

The last two days was spent on the final stage - mastering with Jens Bogren twiddling on his knobs down Fascination Street in Örebro, while we were stand-by in the rathole for urgent repairs an reference listening.

Uploading and downloading the files of the whole production via ftp enabled us to communicate and do the same things we normally would, but now in two different towns. Can't say no to ez living for the hard working modern man. After about 4 attempts, we got there. The album has now been approved by everyone. It got the green light and now in peaceville's hands. Our work is done, yet it has only just begun. On Saturday the band will hook up and we'll have a private pre-listening session with some of our friends and colleagues and celebrate we're done! Then on Monday we'll have an official pre-listening session all day as Peaceville will fly in journo's from the daily papers, music magazines and radio stations from around Europe. A few photo sessions will round up that night. Then next week it's time for the mini-site to go online. Are you ready?

Katatonia - Working On New Material

Katatonia have issued the following update:

"We've been very busy lately writing and completing the material for our 8th studio album and we're proud to announce that Katatonia will enter the studio this summer, starting in a studio in the south of Sweden with drums courtesy of Daniel on June the 10th. We'll then continue on the remainder of the sessions in a studio here in Stockholm further through july and wrap it up in august.

We'll keep the info short for now as we'll launch a studio diary to give you all the in-depth information and details on the album making incl album/song-titles, audio teasers, album artwork and also our tour plans along the recording process. We can already confirm that initially 13 tracks will be recorded and a seIection of 11-12 songs will make it onto the album. We got a few big surprises to reveal and we're confident this material is our most varied, diverse and possibly strongest shit all together on one and the same album. The release date is set for late October on Peaceville."

Katatonia - Issue Update

Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström from Swedish metallers Katatonia has issued the following statement on the bands official site:

"We can hear many questions? "Why is there no new Katatonia album out by now???"

And you might rightfully think so, our eighth album (and the last in the contract with Peaceville) should have been done and put out "ages ago" if things would've gone according to plan? It's crazy how fast time goes by these days and that doesn't help us much when inspiration runs dry. We've been meaning to enter the studio on many occasions already since two years back and I think we ended up canceling booked sessions twice. Although it worked successfully every time in the past, it just got us stressed out and pushed us into a phase of writer's block. From this we learned we better not book anything in advance as it stands, but focus on completing 100% of the material, be perfectly happy with what we got and first then hit the studio.

It seems we might pull things together for maximum devotion this time as all current and previous distractions are now gone. The summer festivals are over and the level of live gigs for the next months are put to a minimum and Bloodbath - our Death Metal side-project's new album is done too (to be released on October 6th, check it out or all our hard work was for nothing hah!).

So what about the music? Bits and pieces have been collected ever since The Great Cold Distance came out. It's just that we've been trying too hard, been thinking too much about the sound and direction. How can we top this and how can we change that. We've been stumbling around off-road looking for the answers and it ended up being a long walk. We don't find it meaningful to trace your own footsteps back from where you came, but we rather find the first nearest exit to the same road up ahead where we're at to get back on the map again.

I wont give away any hints just yet about how it will sound, but we hope to give you more light on the progress of this untitled embryo as we get closer. What's certain is that we've found a good equation to work with now and that my friends is that it's all about the eighth studio album and the autumn. Here comes the Katatonia season?"

Katatonia - New Video Posted Online

Katatonia's brand new video for the song 'July', shot and directed by Charlie Granberg, has been posted online at YouTube.com.

Commented Granberg: "It's basically a perfomance video. But I wanted the feeling of the band playing in a very rough, abandonded or even bombed out house, in an extremely warm country like Mexico or somewere in the middle east. Dark on the inside, but with sunbeams searching their way through the dust, hitting the bandmembers here and there. I really wanted the feeling of the outside world being so much better and brighter than the place the band is in. The biggest challenge with this video I think, was that I wanted to use really warm and grainy colours, wich is kinda rare in this type of music, but at the same time wrap it in a gloomy, apocalyptic feeling. But I think the balance is there and I'm happy the band liked it so much."

Katatonia - Spanish/Portuguese Tour Confirmed

Katatonia guitarist Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström has posted the following on the band's official website:

"Since Spain was left out of the european tour back in spring last year, we're happy to be able to fullfill our fans requests and finally come down to do what we do best in April (better late than never, right?). The last time we played in Spain was over three years ago, so this is an ideal comeback. And the good news doesn't end here. We also have the honor to finally be able to play in Portugal for the first time ever (well kind of, we did play up north in a forest at a obscure festival once) and meet all our (until this day neglected) fans. All of this is bound to be an exciting spring time, so dont miss out!"

Here are all the dates for the tour:

April 11 - Teatro Sá da Bandeira, Porto, Portugal
April 12 - Paradise Garage, Lisbon, Portugal
April 13 - Sala Caracol, Madrid, Spain
April 14 - Sala Bikini, Barcelona, Spain
April 15 - Sala Tunk, Guipuzcoa, Spain

Katatonia - Czech Republic Date Cancelled

Swedish metallers Katatonia have issued the following update:

"The promoter Shindy Productions has cancelled Katatonia's appearance for the upcoming Czech/Prague gig on December 15th according to their official explaination, that reads as follows:

'The problem is that we have beed forced to move the show to the smaller venue due to some problems with the original venue. As far as the new venue has restricted capacity we could not provide the show for all the bands we originally planned to."

As we've failed to find a replacement for this date, no show in Czech Republic will take place at this time, but maybe in mid-2007. The announced gigs in Hungary and Serbia are not affected by this and will go on as planned."
