The concert of the legendary kings of metal, Manowar, on the opening night of Kaliakra Rock Festival 2008 in the Bulgarian "rock capital" of Kavarna on July 5 lasted for five hours and one minute. The performance was the metal band's attempt to break the world record for the longest heavy metal concert, which they themselves set in 2007 at last year's edition of the festival.

Joey DeMaio, Eric Adams, Karl Logan and Scott Columbus pleased a crowd of 20.000 people with a playlist of more than 40 songs, a selection reflecting the band's history and all its studio albums.

Тhis year, the self-annointed "kings of metal" had promised Bulgarian fans to beat last year's performance of three hours on stage, and had specially invited representatives of Guinness book of records to witness the unprecedented event.

Hundreds of fans of the legendary band have been waiting for their arrival at Kaliakra Stadium ever since 10am to pour inside in a frantic hurry to the stage after the gates were opened.

As was the case last year, the audience was warmed up by Holyhell, the power metal band produced by Joey DeMaio, performing tracks from their upcoming debut album and cover versions of classic hits by Aerosmith and Dio.

At 9.49pm, Manowar came out. The band began with classic hits from their earliest albums such as "Heavy Metal Daze", "Fast Taker", "Death Tone", "Dark Avenger", "Carry On", "Kings Of Metal" and many others.

"Bulgaria, we devote this concert to you," the informal leader and main songwriter of the legendary band, Joey DeMaio, said during the pauses between back-to-back hits. "Where it is written in Guinness' book of records about the longest heavy metal concert, it will be written that this was the concert of Manowar in Bulgaria," he said. The bassist added that Bulgaria was the place where people knew how to enjoy true heavy metal music.

At the peak of the concert, a classical string orchestra and a choir of the Sofia Philharmonics joined the musicians in performing some of their greatest hits, among which "Warriors Of The World", "Hail And Kill", and "Defender". In front of the Bulgarian audience, Manowar presented for the first time their new single, "Die With Horror".

With the concert approaching its end, Kavarna mayor Tsonko Tsonev, known as "the metal mayor", congratulated the group and thanked them for performing in his town. Manowar promised to return to Kavarna whenever they were invited.

American heavy metal band Manowar has announced a festival organized by Magic Circle Music, band leader Joey De Maio's own label, at which they will perform as headliners. The festival is going to take place on July 7th, 2007 in Bad Arolsen, Germany (near Kassel in North Hesse). During the announcement at the band's sold-out gig on March 31st, 2007 in Stuttgart, Germany, Joey De Maio has also pointed out that the tickets will cost no more than 10 ?, as "a way to thank the true fans for their undying loyalty during the last two years of unfortunate delays of touring and record releases."

Manowar has started to give away parts of the CD cover for the upcoming new album Gods Of War, which is set to be released on February 23, 2007 in Germany (February 26 for the rest of Europe and April 3 for the USA/Canada).

Next to this first taste of what the album cover will look like, the band also gives away a bit more info about the CD - concept, including 2 more song-titles. Gods Of War is Manowar's first entry in a cycle of concept albums; each a tribute to a different war god. Opening with the epic piece "Overture To The Hymn Of The Immortal Warriors", the tone is set for an album beyond anything Manowar has done before. This album honors Odin - almighty father of the Norse gods - and details the history and exploits of this storied character. His power and wisdom were unmatched among the gods and he is paid tribute with human sacrifice on the battlefield, as heard in the song "The Sons Of Odin", the stomping title track "Gods Of War" and the storytelling "The Blood Of Odin".

Besides the normal jewel-case version, "Gods of War" will also be released as a limited edition in an embossed metal slipcase containing a high grade mediabook bound in leather. Manowar will release their first-ever EP, entitled "The Sons of Odin", on the following dates:

The band's bassist, Joey DeMaio, said "we decided that just a single wasn't enough. We want to give our fans maximum value for minimum expense and the EP format is the best way to do that. It gives us the opportunity to cram tons of audio and video content into one package."

The EP will feature over 27 minutes of total playing time. Besides "The Sons of Odin" ? which features Manowar's patented, lion-hearted metal riffs mixed with arena-rock stomping grooves and orchestral arrangements ? the EP includes the title track from the upcoming Manowar full-length album, "Gods of War", an orchestral version of the new song "Odin" and live performances of "The Ascension" and "King of Kings" from the Earthshaker Fest 2005. Karl Logan, lead guitarist of heavy metal powerhouse Manowar, was injured on Tuesday, January 24th 2006 in a motorcycle accident. Logan sustained severe injuries to his left arm, which will prevent him from performing for an as-yet-unknown period of time. "Manowar will have to reconsider all of our plans, but the good news is that Karl is ok and he'll be back stronger than ever," says MANOWAR bassist Joey DeMaio.

Logan was preparing to record his lead guitar parts for the upcoming, yet to be named, MANOWAR album, the release of which will now be delayed. Touring plans are also expected to change as a result of this unfortunate turn of events. However, Manowar will soldier on. "We don't have any more information at this time," says DeMaio. "But nothing ever has, or ever will, stop MANOWAR." More information will be released as it becomes available.
