Jon Oliva's Pain - Guitarist Matt LaPorte Passes Away

Official press release

It is with great heartache and sorrow that we relay the passing of our dear friend, band-mate, guitarist and brother Matthew LaPorte. Matt passed away in his home shortly after 6 pm on Wednesday. No information regarding his cause of death is currently available.

Matt was a brilliant guitar player on all levels. He understood that instrument better than almost anyone. His knowledge of music in general was just amazing. His contributions to JOP and every band he ever played with was also without measure. He was truly a one-guitar army when he needed to be and his solo performances on all the Jon Oliva's Pain cd's will forever send chills down our spines. A near 20- year history and friendship with one of the true greats has now ended and we are deeply saddened.

Matt was a fan of all kinds of music and instruments, having even embarked on a mission to conquer the hammered dulcimer... one of the hardest instruments to play. He was always trying to expand his musical horizons and influences. He marveled at the musical greats, both old and new. He was never one to rate his talents above others and often commented about the great new music and artists he had just discovered.

Criss Oliva was without a doubt his most profound influence, and anyone who saw him play Savatage songs knew that Criss was channeling his talents via Matt. Matt's attention to detail and always striving to play everything perfect is without comparison. We would sit for hours during rehearsals with him muddling over whether a guitar chord was played exactly as recorded. Sometimes frustrating, but always appreciated in the end. He was the professionals' professional when it came to his guitar skills, and the loss of such a talent will be forever felt.

Matt was a gentle soul, and would avoid conflict at all costs. He got along with everyone and greeted all with a smile on his face. There was a shyness and almost embarrassment felt by him from the adoration of his fans around the world... and he had many.

He was humbled by the love and respect music fans gave to him, but in a quiet way, that made him work just a little bit harder. He had a hilarious, twisted and often sarcastic sense of humor that was unique to him. A very funny man indeed.

We miss you terribly Matt, and we will celebrate your music and life each and every day. That great band in the sky just got a whole lot better, and you are in the most peaceful place you could have ever hoped for. Until we meet again...

Turisas - To Tour Spain And Portugal In May

Turisas has just announced a row of shows in Spain and Portugal in support of their latest album Stand Up And Fight.

This is the first time Turisas does a proper headline tour in the region. An excited Warlord Nygård comments: "We've always had a very strong support on the Iberian peninsula and we're of course extremely happy about that. Over the years we've often been over there as part of a support act, but we felt we owed our fans in Spain & Portugal some proper headline shows for a change.

We've been trying to make this happen for ages, but it's taken time. So now we're definitely coming, make you turn up and show your support! I'm sure we'll have some amazing shows happening! We think this trip will prove that bands could do so much more on the Iberian peninsula, if they had the courage to just go a bit further and explore it. We are super excited about it! Let's paint Iberia black and red together!"

Turisas Tour Dates:

17 May - Barcelona, Sala Apolo
19 May - Zaragoza, Sala Lopez
20 May - Madrid, Sala Heineken
21 May - A Coruña, Ola Green

Pain - Update From The Band

For those wondering what the hell is going on in the Pain camp, the Swedish metallers have released the following statement:

"Well... It's been a while since the last update and we thought it was about time to let you in on a couple of things.

The last couple of months every one of us has been pretty busy with anything but Pain. As you may know Peter has been concentrating on Hypocrisy this year and recently came home from a successful tour in South America. David, who just got signed up with Zildjian, is working for Unique Pyrotechnic along with doing a lot of different stand-in club shows in Sweden. Johan became a dad in August (best wishes from us all), and the more time spent away from Pain means the more time spent with his family. Michael is working with different side projects along with his work for Digidesign.

Now, the following months will be dedicated to Pain and to finish the new songs. Up till today 8 songs are more or less ready to go, and at least 3 or 4 more are needed before we can start recording. Our plans are to start the recordings in late 2010 or early 2011, and have the album ready for a world wide release sometime in May 2011. After that we're about to hit the road and do as many of the summer festivals as we can. Of course there will be a headline tour as well, and if everything works out we'll even break new grounds. Work has also begun with designing a new stage set that will be something out of the average.

As you may understand we're more eager than ever to record this album, make it the best, and play it for you live. So stay tuned and visit our websites for continuous information, studio reports, album details, and the first showdates for 2011."

Supreme Pain - Drummer Leaves The Band, Replacement Announced

Dutch death metal act Supreme Pain has issued the following statement on their MySpace blog:

''Our drummer Toep Duin decided to quit Supreme Pain because of personal issues he need to arrange. And because of that he could not combine that with playing in Supreme Pain.

It is sad, but we understand his decision and wish him all the best for the future. We had a kick ass time together and also shredded some sick gigs. The last gig with Toep behind the kit was at Turock, Essen, Germany. 2 vids of this gig are on Supreme Pain myspace and youtube channel, so check them out! Toep take care and we see eachother somewere around.

The new drummachine for the Supreme Pain brutality wil be Paul Beltman. He is former Sinister drummer and also he played the drums for Fondlecorpse, Infinited Hate and Weapons To Hunt. Also he was playing a couple of years in Judgement Day. So a very experienced and very skilled drummer. Paul is a very cool guy and it's great he is now behind the kit in Supreme Pain.

We had rehearsals and played a couple of brand new songs and it went great. At the moment we will be working on new songs and with Paul behind the kit it will be sick, fast and brutal. So Supreme Pain will continue to create blasting death metal!

Supreme Death Metal GreetZ!"

Jon Oliva's Pain - Guitarist And Bassist Sitting Out Tour

Both Jon Oliva's Pain's bassist and guitarist won't appear on the band's upcoming European tour. The band issued the following statement:

"Due to personal obligations here at home, bassist Kevin Rothney (ex-Circle II Circle) and guitarist Tom McDyne will be unable to join us for this show and the upcoming tour. Everything possible was done to insure that they would be able to attend, and we will miss not having them with JOP for this tour. So, please welcome back Jerry Outlaw on guitar. Many will remember Jerry from JOP's past tours in support of our first release, Tage Mahal. Jerry is one of the most brilliant guitar players anywhere. His stellar tribute band to Frank Zappa (Bogus Pomp), is one of the most recognized Zappa bands in the world. Check him out for yourselves on the net.

Taking over bass duties for the tour is Tampa's phenom-bass player, Jason Gaines. With credits such as Basic Rock Outfit, and Groove Altar, he is one of the most sought after and busiest bass players around. We are grateful to find such a talent to round out the line-up for these shows.

Rehearsals are going great and we will be ready to bring the JOP/Savatage catalog to life in just a few days. See you at the State Theatre and on tour in Europe beginning September 28th in Berlin, Germany. Don't forget the live DVD filming at The 013 in Tilburg, Holland on October 15th!"

Upcoming JOP tour dates include:

17.09.2010 - USA - St. Petersburg, FL @ The State Theatre

Pain Of Salvation - New Album In May, Samples Online

Original news, posted on 25.03.2010

Pain Of Salvation is tentatively scheduled to release its new album, Road Salt - Ivory, in Europe on May 19 via Insideout Music. Frontman Daniel Gildenlöw previously stated: "It is a 12-track album of sweaty grovel, asphalt butterflies, untreaded paths and brave decisions. It will be presented to the world in one standard edition and one limited director's cut, of which we, of course, recommend the latter one. See, as usual, we refuse to add some stuff haphazardly to put together a limited product ? we always see the larger version as the 'real' one; the one that makes us the proudest."

The cover artwork can be viewed here.

UPDATE (thanks to Arkaholic)

Pain Of Salvation has released five preview samples for the upcoming album Road Salt One. Click here to check them out.

Quoted the band: "For those who are curious about the album can listen to the unique preview tracks that have been uploaded to our website - already today, even though the album is not scheduled for release until mid-May!"

Pain - To Release Live Album

Swedish metallers Pain have issued the following update on their MySpace blog:

"We've created a place for all Pain headz to meet up and discuss everything from Pain songs and shows to Peters beard and how much money Johan spends monthly on hygiene hair products. Hopefully we'll be able to answer some of your questions, ask you questions, and maybe we'll get to know each other a little bit better. You'll find it at this location.

Pain will only visit one summer festival 2010. But it will feel and sound like fifteen, he he. We will put all the energy, all the songs, all the headbanging, all the lights, all the power, all the volume, and all the booze we usually spend on a whole summer into one show. Which one it is will be official later this month (February)

The next Pain release will be a live recording made in Paris during the Nightwish tour 2009. It's from the same shows that were filmed for the "Monkey Business" video. If you haven't seen it, watch it here!

The first Pain album ever to be released in the US will be Cynic Paradise with a bonus CD including the Paris live recordings. The exact release date will be official later this month. Uncle Sam is about to get Painalized!

At the moment Peter is holding Europe by the balls with Hypocrisy, and after that they're off to Russia and the United States. How ever, the work with the brand new Pain album has already started. Hopefully it will be ready to blow your speakers by the end of 2010 or early 2011. The release will of course be followed by a headline tour.

See you soon!

/Pain."
