Due to Tom Araya's back surgery, Slayer have been forced to cancel all of their immediate tour plans through April. This includes the American and Canadian Carnage tour dates that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's European headline tour scheduled for March and April. The Slayer camp is working hard to reschedule dates for later this year.

Here's the statement from Slayer's manager Rick Sales: "Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot, but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."

This difficult decision made by the band's bassist/vocalist Tom Araya means the cancellation of Slayer's immediate tour plans that include the American and Canadian Carnage Tour dates that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's UK/European headline tour scheduled for March and April. Booking agents for both Slayer and Megadeth are already hard at work rescheduling the tour dates; tickets already purchased for these shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.

The headbanging Araya, known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing, began experiencing back problems while on the band's Australian/New Zealand/Japanese tour last October. In spite of his rapidly increasing pain and discomfort, he carried on with the tour, but immediately upon returning home saw an orthopedic specialist who diagnosed a cervical radiculopathy. The rocker initially did not want to take the major surgery route, so the specialist recommended a series of minimally-invasive procedures. While those procedures have resulted in some improvement, Araya continues to deal with intermittent bouts of severe pain, numbness and muscle spasms. The surgical procedure that Araya will undergo, called an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion, is a relatively routine practice and the recovery rate is excellent.

Sales added, "As unfortunate as this is for so many people - the Megadeth and Testament camps, the concerts' promoters, and, of course, the fans - Tom's health is the number one priority, and this has to happen."

Unfortunately the guys are getting older and older.
like us...

I think we may hear these kind of news from the good old thrashers in the future

It's unfortunate to hear this. Hope Tom gets better soon and Slayer get touring again.

I hope he is going to be fine for sonisphere.
Warman - 09.01.2010 at 18:11
Yeah, I also hope they'll make it to Sonisphere in August.

Perhaps, so make sure you drink lots of milk before headbangin too much.
but seriously hoping for a quick and complete recovery for Tom

I'm not really a fan of Slayer, but it seems that they are cancelling a lot of stuff, especially because of his back. That sucks indeed.
DoomGuard - 09.01.2010 at 22:32
I must say this is no bueno....

The only bright side of this other than the excellent recovery rate is that maybe Slayer will do their own tour without Megadeth and Testament. I'm thinking selfishly of course, and i love all these bands but hopefully Slayer will do their own tour with some small openers and pick a venue closer to Dallas, Tx. lol, im horrible I know but I kinda wanna see Slayer
SBGMetal - 09.01.2010 at 23:01
Woaw... im glad i did not buy a ticket to see them in portland
Magatouve - 09.01.2010 at 23:39
I did buy a ticket to see them back in late November in London and I blame my bad results in my December final papers (I actually submitted some of them in January a month late!!) on the first cancellation because there was so much energy in me that I was anticipating to unleash in that gig but it stayed inside and destroyed me
And now, the second gig which was supposed to be in March, before my final papers for the second term, is cancelled too!! So what will happen to me in the second term I think my institute will prepare the guillotine for me
sylrmha - 10.01.2010 at 00:38
Found out about this the day after I bought my ticket..........
Loathera - 10.01.2010 at 01:46

I think the worst torture for a human being is to prohibit headbanging when listening to "angel of death".
Can it be possible? aaaarrrrrggghhhh

I cant take it anymore!!!
LeChron James - 10.01.2010 at 04:17
Only a matter of time before they cancel the tour with testament and megadeth.
THE_BLACK_GOD - 10.01.2010 at 09:12
Disappointing news, wish him a good surgery.
NeilZ17 - 10.01.2010 at 12:17
This sucks soooo bad!
at first, I couldn't go to the show, because I had an exam that day. Then it was re scheduled to just before Easter, which was perfect! so me and my buddies got tickets. Now we don't know if we should just give the tickets back and get our money, or should we wait and see if there will be another European tour anytime soon.... *sigh*.......

Tom, get well soon! I NEED to see you guys play live!
Daggon - 10.01.2010 at 21:50
I just hope he will get well soon, well It's Tom fucking Araya, he can do it.
