I know a lot of people liked Crack the Skye, but I think it's their worst release and hope for a return to their original albums.

I'm actually hoping for a combining of old and new.
If that's even possible.

I disagree with Troy. Crack The Skye was an awesome release. sure, it sacrificed some straight-ahead muscle, but in return for added depth. whereas prior albums eventually lost luster with subsequent listens, CTS grew more and more on me.

Really had to listen a lot to Crack the Skye before I realised how good it actually is. If you ask me though, I could use another Leviathan album. They did say they wrote some of their heaviest material for the Jonah Hex soundtrack, before they had to scrap it and re-record something more laid back. Holding thumbs 2011 release date!

I hope they go back to that intense, 'Remission' sound on their next album. I've always loved that album more then the others.

Seriously, to all those who thought Crack the Sky was their worst, go see them play that album live, front to back....it's incredibly mindblowing, more then the other albums. It does sound more tame on CD, but live, it is indeed their best effort (I have seen them live about 4 times playing all albums, so trust me)

I wouldn't count on it. They seem to be following a pattern of becoming less and less extreme with each release. I'd be surprised if they changed that now.

I am looking forward to anything that Mastodon release, for they were the band to introduce me to the heavier side of the metal world.

Frankly, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an intriguing blend of their old sound and new sound. If they were to marry the progressive intricacies of Crack the Skye with the heaviness of Leviathan, they would have a groundbreaking album on their hands.

As one of the bands that drew me seriously to Metal in the first place I can but say that the bar is set at "incredible" and I don't think they will disappoint. Mellow or Hard-edged, it matters not at all.

Also: looking forward to see the album & cover art. They always seem to pull something amazing in that aspect.

I thought Crack The Skye was the pinnacle of their releases, but I guess they were only trying to appeal to prog pussies like me.

It was my favorite too, but I dont really look for prog in my music, so maybe they just put out that sublime type of enjoyable record. Ive quite enjoyed all the albums, with Blood Mountain being the one i was least enthusiastic about.

Crack The Skye is the only album I like from whay they've so far, but I will have no problem if they make it heavier.
The bottom line:

I think Crack the Skye is an awesome, epic, soring anthem of an album. There old style like Remission is good but you can tell they have definitely matured as musicians through each release.

I used to feel the exact same way. I love how fucking heavy and crushing they get and they used to do that a LOT more often with their earlier releases (especially remission and leviathan). What changed my mind was when i went on a little road trip to my grandparents house and decided to give Crack The Skye a second chance. I ended up listening to it like 3-4 times on the way there. It's so much deeper than their old stuff. I find new stuff in those songs every time i listen to them.

Now that being said, Crack The Skye is still not my favorite release from them, though i have learned to really love it. Leviathan is still, by far, my favorite. I am REALLY excited to see where they take it with this next one and i do hope they expand on the CTS style, or just blow us away with something really new.
