The organizers of the Hammer Of Doom Festival are out looking for another headliner to finalize the bill after seminal UK doom metal act Cathedral cancelled their appearance at the festival. Apparently the performance of one of the other bands has created some, uh, bad blood.

The organization of the festival, taking place October 28-29 at Posthalle in Würzburg, Germany, released the following announcement: "Unfortunately Cathedral cancelled their show at Hammer Of Doom Festival cause they do not play with The Devil's Blood. In their opinion the band is doing animal abuse, cause they use pig blood as part of their stage show. We now had the choice of cancelling The Devil's Blood, or risk the cancellation of Cathedral. Since we do not let anyone tell us who is playing our festival, we decided for The Devil's Blood and as expected Cathedral cancelled their show. We see the cause for their cancellation very doubtful since there is not any kind of animal abuse in the stage show of The Devil's Blood nor are they doing anything illegal."

Cathedral issued the following statement: "Regrettably, Cathedral will be withdrawing from their planned appearance at this year's Hammer of Doom festival. This is due to the use of animal blood as part of the stage show of one of the other bands on the bill. We do not condone nor endorse this type of activity, and in fact we are very much opposed to it. We would like to apologise sincerely to any of our fans who were expecting to see us at Hammer of Doom, but we feel very strongly about this issue and therefore felt we had no alternative but to withdraw".

In a recent update the band has announced they will leave the stage permanently after a December 3rd gig at the London Kentish Town Forum.

No need, I have a clear enough picture of what you intend to do.

Fucking pussies.

Unless Cathedral are vegans they are a bunch of hypocrites.

Meanwhile, Devil's Blood should use human blood. \m/

Lee Dorrian (vocalist) is a vegan. I'm not sure about the rest of the band though... Lee definitely isn't a hypocrite though, and after writing a song like "Requiem For The Voiceless" on the last album about animal abuse, it's great to see that he won't compromise his views on the matter.

And yep, using human blood would be far more ethical, imo. lol
Promonex - 11.06.2011 at 20:42
Great to see that an organizer has the guts to risk the cancellation of the headliner in order to keep control over the billing. They might have wanted to compare the bands' views first, but I guess this is somewhat of a precedent in Cathedral's case.
(Or maybe not. Have never really cared much about Cathedral's views anyway.)
Elodie Artour - 11.06.2011 at 22:55
Well, I'm personally a vegetarian and I totally stand against animal abuse. However, do Devil's Blood indeed use real blood for their stage shows? I doubt that.
BitterCOld - 11.06.2011 at 23:24
Not sure what the problem is... i doubt the band is forking over cash to kill the pigs for the blood, it's most likely just 'excess' from animals slaughtered for food.

tasteless? yes.

abuse? no.
Aetherius - 12.06.2011 at 00:10
Damn they sound like babies, lol. Perhaps they were just looking for an out anyway and saw this as a chance to leave AND it doubled as being "politically correct" as well. Screw it!

My thoughts exactly.

Not very metal is it?

Vegans, aren't they the ones who don't eat anything that casts a shadow?

Geezer Butler has been a vegetarian (later a vegan) since before Black Sabbath even started. lol There's nothing "unmetal" about not eating meat, or denouncing animal abuse.
