Carach Angren - New Video Online

"The Sighting Is A Portent Of Doom", the first-ever video from Dutch melodic black metal band Carach Angren can now be watched below.

The clip was shot over a period of about six months by Carach Angren and Erik Wijnands of Negakinu Photography.

"The Sighting Is A Portent Of Doom" comes off the band's latest album, entitled Death Came Through A Phantom Ship, which was released early last year through Maddening Media.

I wonder what's grimmmer, the piercing gaze of the drummer or the fact that the singer tries to Bernie in the first ten seconds. Also Death Came Through A Phantom Ship is their second album, not the debut.

A) Nobody called this their debut album. B) Debut album does not mean it's the first album, it means breakthrough album.
Some bands don't have a debut album til they are 3 or 4 albums deep into their career. From what I've seen so far CA have yet to release a debut album anyway...

A) Well when this news was first posted it said this was their debut album. But after I commented on this it was changed to latest. B) http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/debut Just about anywhere you look debut tends to mean first, not breakthrough.

Exactly the literal translation of the word debut is a first public appearance and as such a debut album is also the first time the band is being presented to the world on a massive scale. A performers debut appearance is not their first appearance ever its the first time they are being introduced as a main performer. Or even in the case of band's they release demos and EPs all the time without debuting as such a debut album can be the first album being released and some band's get lucky and their first LP is them breaking out and be massively publicized and others like Carach Angren will release several albums before they are debuted to the public by a major record label. I've read several reviews in my day and seen many record labels advertise a band's second or third release as their debut album because this is the first time they have been signed to a major label and are being presented to the masses. The word debut, in music especially album releases, is not limited to the first album but can also be interpreted as the breakthrough or breakout of a band or artist to the masses.

Well if you're going to call it a "massively publicized album" or "being presented to the world on a massive scale" then 99% of metal bands will never have a debut album, which is an awfully silly interpretation. Also public≠release on a massive scale. Either way, since you now say it "can also be interpreted as the breakthrough or breakout of a band or artist to the masses", then you do realize you attacked me for a difference in a subjective interpretation. Grow up dude.

Oh now you're just being petty, obviously by "massive publicized album" that was a relative term referring to the size of the metal world, I'm not daft enough to mean "massive publicized album" on a scale of say Britney Spears or Bieber, lol. Well you attacked someone else first who obviously believed the same as I do in regards to the "subjective interpretation" of the word debut (they apparently didn't have any conviction in their interpretation) so I felt compelled to aid them. So I suppose we both need to "grow up" a little, I apologize for any offense made as I did not intend to offend sir. Lol I wasn't trying to attack anyone with my first post, just trying to clarify what I thought was a mistake since up til two days ago i had never heard of this other interpretation of debut. Anyways I think this all stemmed from a communication error. No apology needed; but I'd like to say sorry for the "grow up dude" comment. It was rather unnecessary. Anyways, no hard feelings by me.

Fair enough. Honestly when I first got into music I thought the same of the word debut but had read so many reviews and seen so many advertisements on the internet and in metal mags that used debut the way I do now and so I came to view debut that way. I actually sat down after seeing enough usage that way and pondered how they could all be using debut in this way and the explaination given in prior conversation was the justification I arrived at and then that made perfect sense to me and have used debut, in terms of album releases, in that same way ever since. And ditto on the "wasn't trying to attack anyone with my first post, just trying to clarify what I thought was a mistake" I was only doing the same. :-) I wouldn't say "grow up" was entirely unnecessary as without that little stab at my ego I might not have felt compelled to retort and thus we couldn't have had all this fun defending our respective "subjective interpretation"s. Lmao, yes I'm aware I have distorted mentality about having fun...

Simple, debut albums ALWAYS means first album released by a band and NOT breakthrough album. If some mags and advertisements say it then they are totally wrong and should go back to school and pay attention during their English classes.

Nothing subjective about that all.

I was going to post something like what Marcel said. The debut album is the first full-length studio recording done by one band, regardless of the music project's popularity at the time or afterward. If album 1 sells 1,300 copies while album 5 sells 145,000 copies, and album 5 is the first album to sell over 35,000 copies, then album 1 is still the debut album. It is entirely erroneous and even ridiculous to think that perception and popularity of an album determine whether or not it is a debut album, as opposed to its actual position in the band's discography. As Marcel said, there is nothing at all subjective about what is and what is not a debut album.

Instead of arguing about the debut just give Lammendam a listen and take the fantastic trip this album offers!
