Machine Head - To Headline Wacken Open Air 2012

San Francisco thrashers, Machine Head, have been confirmed as a headlining act for the Wacken Open Air 2012, in Germany. Machine Head have played in Wacken before both in 2005 and 2009.

This news comes right before their new album, entitled Unto The Locust is released tomorrow, September 27th, through Roadrunner Records. More album details were previously reported over here.

Here it is the announcement taken from Wacken's official website: "After destroying the Holy Grounds of Wacken in 2005 and 2009, we're proud to have Thrash Metal icons Machine Head back at the world's biggest Heavy Metal festival with an exclusive German festival appearance 2012. Machine Head is well-known for their sweat-inducing and intensive live shows. A fact they constantly prove since 1992 when the band was founded in San Francisco. Having released 6 studio albums, their 7th album named Unto The Locust will be in stores at the 23rd in Germany, at the 26th in UK and the rest of Europe and at the 27th of September 2011 in North America. Be prepared when Robb Flynn, Adam Duce, Phil Demmel and Dave McClain hit the stage with new material as well as their famous hits such as "Imperium", "Davidian" and "Aesthetics Of Hate", just to name a few. Machine Head does play thrash, albeit a modern version of it.

This.

There's a lot of thrash in MH's catalogue. (aside from TBR and "Supercharger" which were both largely devoid of any thrash)

Took me some time realising why I didn't see them when they played in 2009... apparently Enslaved were on the at the same time...

Hmm... doubt I'd ever pay to see them at their own show, but I might think about watching them at a festival. There are definitely worse bands out there.

Wouldn't ever refer to them as 'thrash' though. Never really understood why people do, if I'm honest.
Are there some elements of thrash in their music? Yes.
Is there enough thrash influence in their music to call them a thrash band? Not really.

Much more in common with Pantera, Lamb of God, Fear Factory, Chimaira, '90s era Anthrax etc. than any actual thrash band.

I'd definitely say MH have more thrash elements than any of those bands. Sure, it's a more modern take on thrash, but songs like "Struck A Nerve" and "Bay Of Pigs" you really couldn't call anything but thrash...
