Cannibal Corpse - Another New Song Online

"Scourge Of Iron," a brand new song from US metallers Cannibal Corpse, is available for streaming at this location.

Bassist Alex Webster commented: ""Scourge Of Iron" helps to show the song writing diversity on Torture. [First album single] "Demented Aggression" is blazing fast and frantic, while "Scourge Of Iron" is a down tempo, pounding song. They're both death metal, but at opposite ends of the speed spectrum. Expect to hear this kind of variety throughout Torture. We've utilized many different tempos, rhythms, and feels in these songs with the goal of making an album that is varied and dynamic but also very brutal. On March 13th you'll get to decide whether or not we succeeded."

"Scourge Of Iron" comes off the band's forthcoming album, entitled Torture, which will be released on March 13 via Metal Blade Records. More details about the album were previously reported over here.

Really, really loving this song! The main thing I loved about "KILL" was the diversity in it's material. This one seems like it may be similar in feel to that album... I'm very hopeful this one is going to quite a bit better than their disappointing last album.

Seriously asking, is there any diversity in CC's material?

Of course. Unless you only class being diverse as being genre hoppers like Faith No More. Saying all CC's material sounds the same is just as ridiculous as the famous "all Slayer songs sound the same" line. Just listen to this song ("Scourge Of Iron"), and then the first single released from the same album. ("Demented Aggression") Aside from both songs fitting into the genre of death metal, they don't sound alike at all. You'd have to be pretty ignorant of the genre to say both these songs sound the same.

I can imagine two songs from the same album may have different flavors, my question was pointed at their career mostly.
What changes do you see from one record to other?

I quite liked Scourge Of Iron. I remember I listened to "Tomb of the Mutilated" and "The Wretched Spawn" and they didn't get me.

Nope. Still not getting into this band. I tried again and again but it never sticked. Meh I guess I should learn to move on.

To the untrained ear, there probably is no differences between each album, or that they all sound the same. But if you really know the band and the genre, there are definitely differences that can be picked out from album to album. Take the first two albums for instance. "Eaten Back To Life" is mostly primitive riffing, with a very crusty production. There's also a very obvious thrash influence on the album. "Butchered At Birth" is a heavier, more violent album, but the songs seem to blend into each other more, and don't stand out as much as individual songs as the songs on the previous album do. And the thrash influences are mostly abscent, making it a full bodied death metal album. Also, "The Bleeding" is a very different album than say, "Kill".

"Tomb Of The Mutiliated" is a very overrated album, in my opinion. It has a very evil atmosphere, but individually, most of the songs don't really hold up. "The Bleeding" has a similar style, but I find that album so much better in terms of songwriting, and standout riffs.

Exactly. Most genre specific bands have very little, if any diversity in their music, as they are bound by the confines of the genre they play. I've never understood why CC take such a bashing for not being diverse, when the vast majority of genre specific bands aren't any more diverse than them. CC are just an easy target because they are the most popular death metal band, and as we all know, in the world of metal, popular=crap. CC shouldn't be singled out for something that most metal bands are "guilty" of being.

Very well supported. Plus CC gets bashed because they just picked on them very easily. Gets ranted sometimes for no reasons but they just forget that every time Cannibal comes up with something...its very creative.

I can see diversity in those.
Metallica: Went from Thrash to Heavy Metal to Blues to Shit to Modern Thrash
Megadave: Not very keen on this one, but I know they went from thrash to heavy metal kinda like Metallica
Nightwish: Went from Power Metal to Symphonic Metal
Opeth: Went from Prog with black influences to Prog with death influences to just prog hard rock

However, there is nothing wrong with not having diversity. I wasn't bashing CC, I was genuinely asking from my ignorance after reading Angelic's comment

Yes, but a band cannot be that diverse without changing genres, which was my point. Load, St. Anger et al, are not thrash albums. Just like Risk and Youthanasia aren't thrash albums. Cannibal Corpse are diverse, but within the confines of the death metal genre. There's only so diverse you can get without changing your style completely. Metallica and Megadeth have been heavily criticised in some quarters for changing their style, yet CC are also bashed for remaining within the confines of their own genre. Basically, if you're a band with above average popularity, you have to ride with the punches, as you will come in for much heavier criticsm than bands who are less well known. Change your style, or stick with it, if you're popular, you will be heavily criticised whatever you do.

I know you weren't bashing them, but I know a lot of people do use their "lack of diversity" as a means of bashing them. Ironically supporting bands who are as diverse, or even less so than CC. When that happens, you know the bashing is being done just because.

Oh, and you should definitely check out "The Bleeding"! You might like it.
