Great news for black metal fans because legendary band Emperor will reform and headline Wacken Open Air 2014 for the 25th anniversary of the fest. The news was announced earlier today at Wacken's press conference which was attended by Ihsahn (Vegard Sverre Tveitan) and Samoth (Tomas Haugen).

On the official Wacken fest page it reads: Small surprise in the morning: Todays Ihsahn Meet & Greet will be transformed into a real Emperor Meet & Greet! We will see you there at 01:45 o'clock at the Relentless Meet & Greet Stand! Is there something going on...?

"Press conference with Ihsahn and surprise Samoth. They will play Wacken together in 2014! Guess who is back!"

Emperor's last studio album was 2001's Prometheus: The Discipline Of Fire And Demise but for now very few details have been revealed about what else will happen.

MONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

As far as I'm concerned, they can have all of mine if they do an American tour.

This could be good or bad, we'll see! As of now .......... BEYOND THE GREAT VAST FOREST!!

Money or not, that's pretty cool.

I find it a it quite pathetic to reunite for a second time. First in 2006 for a year or two and now again. Hopefully Ihsahn realized that his solo work is really mediocre and that he should start recording with Emperor again.
Unhealer - 03.08.2013 at 01:10
I guess they reunite just to have fun with a few shows. Ihsahn already said they won't record an album or anything like that... and that if he did, it would sound just like his solo stuff since he was the main songwritter in latter Emperor stuff.

The later Emperor stuff is vastly superior to anything he did as a solo artist and sounds totally different to it as well.

Of course it does. What he means is that Prometheus was practically a solo album and if things had stayed that way, next Emperor albums would have followed a similar path to the one Ihsahn's solo career followed.

Any chance of a new album?

Awesome! I'll need to watch the footage of their performance when the time comes, their 2006 Wacken show was epic. \m/

I have to respectfully but wholeheartedly disagree - Ihsahn's two most recent solo albums were great. Not sure why everyone always compares late emperor to his solo work, because the two are fairly dissimilar.
LostBoy - 07.08.2013 at 11:41
Who will play bass? Mortiis, Tchort?
Would be great to have Mortiis and his make up xD
Apothecary - 08.08.2013 at 06:38
Meh... this would be a lot more exciting if it was announced that they'd be recording a new album. Otherwise, it's just a disbanded band briefly reforming for a festival. Sleep and Arcturus have been doing that for years, nothing new to see here with Emperor.

Exactly the same thing I said to everybody who started freaking out in the SB when it was first announced. "Big whoop"

I know, just saying: it's not as if bands reuniting just for a festival is anything new and fancy.

Yeah, At The Gates even released some sort of a farewell DVD The Flames Of The End, but now it seems like they are up to do the Rolling Stones, which is probably a heart attack onstage.

I don't see why it's "pathetic". Sure, I'm not freaking out about it, but I have no problem with Emperor playing a few shows. To me that sounds a lot better better than an actual reunion where a band releases an uninspired new album just to have something to support with a tour. Every time that happens, fans just want to see the classics live, and with Emperor that's all you'll get. No mediocre new stuff to ruin the fun.
