At The Gates - Tease Big Announcement

The Internet is abuzz because the titans At The Gates just released a mysterious teaser video and it seems like a big announcement is to come. The video doesn't have a description or many clues except for "2014" and what appears to be lyrics, leading many to believe the Swedes have a new album planned. Could it be a new album or perhaps a new tour? At The Gates could follow the footsteps of Carcass, who recently released their first album in 17 years.

The band's last album was the classic Slaughter Of The Soul from 1995. This teaser, however, gives the indication that something big might in the works. However, nothing is confirmed. We will know more when the band spills the beans.

A second teaser has been released by the band showcasing what appears to be recorded songs and some studio gear. "At War With Reality", could it be the title of a new album? The mystery still remains...

Slaughter Of The Soul is one of the most overrated albums in metal... However it's still quite good.

I think it would be better if they just left SotS as their final opus. Earth shatteringly good shite, don't know if they have much to gain from another album, but I guess it would be cool if they released one

It's no easy feat to write melodeath that catchy So no, it's not overrated.

SotS is indeed overrated, but it's still quite a good record, as Hex says. Still more of a thrash album than a melodeath one anyway to my ears.

I'd say it's more of an even blend between melodeath and thrash. It can't be overrated because it's rated high for a reason, it appeals to the masses, and such material is not easily written else, consequently, the SotS's ratings would be lower

So Death Thrash it is.

I don't think SotS is overrated. Superb album and it did help bring Gothenburg to the forefront of Metal at the time.

More like thrash with a flick of melody every now and then. Nowhere near enough melodeath in it, even if it did help the genre somewhat. That being said it's far from being AtG's best album. The great, sombre melodies of Terminal Spirit Disease, the caustic roughness of The Red Sky Is Ours and the fantastic OSDM Garden's of Grief EP outdo SotS if you ask me, so definitely an overrated record to my ears as it's better received than those other albums.

The score isn't inflated, it simply reflects accessibility and appeal. If ratings were based solely on quality then perhaps it would be overrated.

Edit: Also, have you guys even listened to the first three tracks? They're laden with melodeath riffs...in a very typical style at that.

I love Terminal Spirit Disease but couldn't stand Gardens of Grief.

Admitedly I'd only heard Gardens after hearing the later stuff so had a certain preconception as to what I was expecting.

It did put me off checking out The Red Sky Is Ours tor With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness though.

The Red Sky Is Ours is quite the technical album, comparability speaking anyway. Nothing like Gardens of Grief. Also has segments of violin and folky sections so quite a strange mix. I imagine the production puts people off but it's a very immediate and intense record.

Quality is subjective too.

Also, a good point. Although to be fair, they didn't do anything groundbreaking on SotS. Despite that, they wrote some immensely catchy tunes, which in itself is worthy of a high rating.

So With Fear... doesn't do it for you?

I still think Primal Breath is the best AtG song ever written.

Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth?
BTW catchy? It is somehow catchy but also boring at the same time. It is 'simply too simple'.

I can't remember what that one sounds like for some reason. I gave it an 8 so it must be good.

Yep, why do you think those are some of the bigger melodeath bands? I agree that melodeath can be quite primitive at times, but there's a LOT of crap in the genre out there. To stand out....not easy.

Arch Enemy, another band that is these days more thrash with melodic tendencies than melodeath. I eventually saw what Marcel meant when he said that.

I would welcome a new album with open arms. And a tour with a Stockholm date would surely spice that up.

Thrash and (a large portion of) melodic death bands share the 6th string chug-spam with individual (or group of) notes in between. As such it's easy to get muddled when discerning which is which when melody and screams come into play. SotS thrash? 50% at most. However, from what I've heard, modern Arch Enemy is indeed mostly thrash.

Second teaser added to the news. Thanks qlacs!

Still doesn't give anything away though. If it ends up not being a new album, that's just cruel.

Most melodic DM has got nothing to do with Death Metal except vocals.

But everything this band did prior to Slaughter did. Well not sure about Terminal, I don't remember that album at all.

But Gardens of Grief, The Red In The Sky Is Ours and With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness are proper meloDM albums.
