At The Gates - Confirm New Album, New Label

Damn, this is really happening! At The Gates have just confirmed that they will indeed be releasing a new album, 19 years after their last. Following a touring reunion and more recently two mysterious teasers, the seminal Swedish metallers have announced that they are currently working on a comeback studio album (At War With Reality) in the classic line-up of their renowned effort from 1995 (Slaughter Of The Soul), at the moment slated for release worldwide by the end of 2014. Also, it will drop via Century Media Records.

We have another comeback album in the works. You can do the happy dance now. Do you think the band can pull it off?

The following statement was also released: "So, here we are almost 24 years since the birth of At The Gates, and some 18+ years since our latest album Slaughter Of The Soul. A lot of years have passed and we have embarked on some life-changing reunion tours and shows the last couple of years.

"So, why make a new album you might ask, and why now? Well, what we learned from the last couple of years hanging out and playing shows together, is that we enjoy what we do to the fullest extent. We love playing music together, and we love to hang out as friends. But, as a musician, we constantly write new music. It's a huge part of our identities.

"We are fully aware that we have made some very drastic statements in interviews as well as the closing words on the DVD about the longevity of At The Gates, but things change, situations change and people change. When Anders sent the first song last summer, we had zero expectations of the outcome. We only knew one thing - That it sounded amazing! At the time we weren't even sure there would be an album, but as things progressed, more songs came into existence, and we knew we were on to something great.

"We know you are all curious about the new material, and to make a simple explanation of where we are at musically, we would describe it as a perfect mix between early At The Gates & Slaughter Of The Soul-era At The Gates, trying to maintain the legacy and the history.

"We chose Century Media as a worldwide partner for the upcoming album. We have all been friends for years with people at the label. Jonas & Anders have a history with The Haunted there (as well as Adrian with Paradise Lost).

"So, we hope to bring you updates about the progress of the new album soon. The plan is to record the album in June/July with a tentative release in October / November of 2014 on Century Media Records."

Fantastic news, provided this sounds anything like their pre-SOTS stuff.

Hell yuss! Finally something to look forward to!

"perfect mix between early At The Gates & Slaughter Of The Soul-era"

I know bands always say this kind of shit but if there is any truth to this, this could be one hell of an album!

I'm getting this very itchy feeling signalling that the day is not so far when we see Nuclear Assault returning with new album in news section.

I've seen past couple of "not-recording-yet-touring" bands have reunited for what they love. Next up, it should be Nuclear fucking Assualt.

I've read it as: "We've seen the success of Carcass and decided to jump on this release-an-album-after-a-shitton-of-years bandwagon!"
With all respect I have for the band I don't think they still have the creative force they had on Slaughter Of The Soul.

But who knows. Maybe they can actually pull it off?

I am hoping it will sound like early AtG. I have no problems with SotS but Red and With Fear is by far their best.

Well, certainly didn't expect this to happen... even with them touring and all.

In my books SotS is a masterpiece but the earlier recordings are more or less huge barricades of noise... they're just are not my cup of tea.

*Circumspectly waiting for AtG to pull this one off* Hopes up.

VERY good news. This confused world of labeling-obsessed, tyrannical tykes needs one of the most important figures in style-shifting, passionate, and ultimately VICIOUS extreme metal to come back and show how it's done. My fanatical side has thoroughly soiled myself. And it looks like it's just in time for my freakin' birthday in Nov. So I will gladly take it personally!!! \m/

I hope they return to the old logo

As for the music, I just hope they don't overproduce it like most anticipated "reunion" albums have been.

So long as they go macho on it I don't really care what it sounds like, but would always have secretly been totally good with Slaughter of the Soul being their final opus... Oh well.

This is so awesome! I really hope they continue the sound they had on SOTS. First Carcass and now At the Gates, if Emperor decides to make a new album I can die a happy man.

Gonna be fun to see what these guys can do with the AtG moniker after all these years. They've gone in different directions in their other projects, so let's see what happens.

Musically, that would be a new Disillusion and Anorexia Nervosa album. However, dying a happy man for me would be to live life to it's fullest, not listening to new music.

It'll probably be overproduced, sterile and lacking in any personality, just like the new Carcass, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Yep. Totally expecting something like new Carcass. Old band trying to stretch their legacy as far as possible just to appear back on the map, where a new album is only a excuse to do so.

The primary thing that keeps my interest is that they said it'd also have stylistic directions reminiscent of their early materials.

I have no problem with Slaughter, but I tend to like a lot of their imitators way more than that album actually and it would totally make no sense for them to write something like it.
Would also be pretty pleased with an album with 10 "The Swarm"s on it, though.

But yeah production could probably make or break this, because you cannot really do anything like their early albums with a crisp clean production.

God, their earlier material is even more overrated than SotS around here, and that's saying something considering they're not any better. Talk about irony.

Come on, pretty much the same riffs has been used throughout SotS.

Their earlier albums are way more diverse, and also their first one has that tendency to give me a really weird vibe, like, I dunno how to describe it, those riffs sound completely insane, and I really haven't heard anything like that aside from this band.

Add on top of that those two albums are some of the few death metal that I managed to make a sentimental connection to, and you got it why I like them so much. Slaughter of the Soul is so bland compared to them.

Still don't understand hate for new Carcass - but then are these the same people that hated Heartwork and Swansong and even Necroticism (and then probably don't listen to Reeks of Putrefaction)?

Errr, where did you get that idea? I absolutely love Heartwork and Necrotism (debut is poor though). It's the fact I love those two albums that gives me the insight to realise that Surgical Steel is little more than a husk of those great records. I think you'll find it's the same story with the majority of others who dislike the new one.
