Mastodon - Reveal New Album Title

In a recent interview, Mastodon's bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders discussed the band's forthcoming album and it was revealed that it will be called Once More Round The Sun. The successor to The Hunter is finally coming and is slated for a release later this year on Warner Brothers Records. Once More Round The Sun clocks at around 60 minutes, and it is currently being mastered.

Troy Sanders explains the title to Paste Magazine: "The idea was generated before we recorded the title track on the record, but the title was thought up many months ago. After we finished the two-year touring cycle on our last record, The Hunter, we were kind of gearing up to go back to our rehearsal space in Atlanta. And we were starting the effort, the time, the blood, the energy, the months of driving, the recording and the long process between recording and the release day. In a nutshell: we're fortunate enough to do this again, but there's this feeling of this yearly cycle. It's not a bad thing. We get to go tour a bunch, we get to record a bunch of songs we love. It's embracing the positive?the wonderful side, to be able to have the same four dudes who love doing what we do so much. And like anything in the Mastodon world, it's open to interpretation."

In terms of the new album direction: "We're all over the world as far as themes go. But there are a few sprinkles of epic goodness. A lot of people ask us if it kicks off where The Hunter left off. And to a large degree, I suppose yes. We recorded it and took it on the road with us, and then we headed back to our rehearsal space and started working out ideas. I've had a lot of time to ingest this record, and it's solid. It's a large slab of granite. I'm once again completely proud of these guys."

Once More Round The Sun's sessions also left the band with some extra material. The band ended up cutting around 30 minutes of music, which Sanders hopes to see as an additional EP after the album release: "We didn't want a 90-minute album. We like to record around the 60-minute mark. That's what our favorite records are. We're in love with all 15 of [the songs], so they might all see the light of day in some platform or another."

The album artwork was created by Oakland-based artist Skinner and more should probably be revealed in the near future.

But opeth beats Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.

If you take two entities and place them side by side and proceed to use the same adjective to describe them despite that fact that one possesses far more of that quality than the other and is made distinct by that difference, then what's the point?

You just answered your own question. They were simply arguing to you that in this case, the "one that possesses far more of that quality than the other" is Mastodon, not Opeth. That's all.

If you have not read that legendary review, you have some homework to do. It competes the that infamous review of Enslaved as the best "how not to write review" article ever

Had another listen to the latest album earlier and not really sure. Sludge-lite at best but progressive sludge still suits them pretty well.

Okay, I'll relisten their latest one tomorrow.

Mother of fuck, where is the cheese grater when my face needs it?
And here I was thinking I was the one that started that "pure, unadulterated passion" thing, although I'm not too sure that's a distinction I'd necessarily want to be known for.

Totally unrelated to it, and just came from my own mind. I've never seen that review until now, and honestly I wouldn't have had any incentive to. Not at all on the Opeth hype, and few of their albums other than Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse really do anything for me.

Am I the only one here who will comment on the actual article? I like the new title and I can't wait for the album! I like Opeth, but I love Mastodon AND I saw them both on The Hunter/Heritage Tour. They are both complex, but I'd say from a guitarist's perspective Mastodon is pushing playing to another level. Some of Brent's stuff is near impossible for the average or even professional players.

Apparently

Yo - this is an article on news about Mastodon. Just because no Mod is here doesn't mean you all can go nuts. Derailment at it's finest here

Really looking forward to it. Also looking forward to nuking off topic posts.

As for Sludge - it''s music. it might be loosely tied there, noisecore, prog, and other styl\es. People just continually try to mash ever amorphous pegs into defined round holes. whatever.

Amusingly, though, as much as I enjoyed The Hunter and the directions they traveled, I will admit to missing the lack of coherent conceptual threading of their prior albums.

Definitely looking forward to listening to the new Mastodon, especially after The Hunter rekindled my interest.

As far as the Opeth thing, I would say Opeth is more pretentious than sophisticated.

The Hunter was a bit of a let down for me after the mighty Crack The Skye. Hope this is on the same level as that one.

I guess i can give The Hunter one more try. I felt like it was some what bland in comparison to their 2009 album. Best of luck on this new album!

His playing on the Crack The Skye record is fucking phenomenal. I've been playing for about 20 years and some of the things he plays amaze the shit out of me. It's the phrasing, agility, and timing. He doesn't do a lot of tricks. His playing is just really fluid and out of the box (pentatonic or otherwise).

I like The Hunter quite a bit. I don't think the majority of it is much different than what they've been doing since Blood Mountain. Their albums have mosh pit songs, weird songs, and melodic songs. The Hunter just tipped more toward weird or melodic. I'm excited that another album is coming.

However I do miss the Remission/Leviathan days.

Great days indeed. I'm in the minority as someone who really dislikes Crack the Skye, and The Hunter was not bad but not great kind of material too, but damn they really hit the nail on the head with their first three albums.

Are they technically still sludge?

Seems like the Georgia scene is going sludge-lite. I prefer Kylesa's progression rather than Mastodon with The Hunter and Baroness with Yellow and Green though.
Still looking forward to it!

Well that seems a tad extreme. I wouldn't say Opeth sucks, but I certainly prefer Mastodon. Nothing they've made has sucked yet, so I hope/bet this won't.

Yeah I do too. Mastodon peaked for me on Crack The Skye, which had the best balance of any Mastodon album, but Kylesa's continuing progression toward the psychedelic is definitely more up my street.

Mastodon's latest was too heavy on the groove and too soft on the structure. They're probably hitting the career stride where bellowing their lungs out is getting unpracticable. Opeth and Baroness are two other favourites that reached that mark too. Can't say I've cared for many of these bands' releases past that point but Mastodon certainly deserve the benefit of the doubt.
