My Dying Bride - Hamish Glencross Leaves, Calvin Robertshaw Rejoins

My Dying Bride have announced a change in their line-up. The band split with long-time guitarist Hamish Hamilton Glencross and also confirmed the return of original guitarist Calvin Robertshaw to the fold. The reasons for Hamish's departure were described as "irreconcilable differences" but the British metallers still wish him all the luck with his future endeavours. Also, in case you are wondering, the band already has 7 songs written for their new album and the plan is to record it later this year.

My Dying Bride clarify that this has absolutely no impact on the band's forthcoming 3 final shows of 2014. It will go ahead as planned. Their longstanding guitar technician Robb Philpotts will fill in for these 3 shows:

  • Copenhell, Friday the 13th June
  • Metaldays, Friday 25th July
  • Brutal Assault, Saturday 9th August

About the return of Calvin, the band says: "What more can we say to that. Calvin is one of the original guitarists that helped make My Dying Bride what it is today. His departure after the now infamous 34.788% Complete album left us all stunned but now we have convinced him to rejoin and are sure this is going to be a success.

"We feel that My Dying Bride has now stabilised again and we are really, really excited at the prospect of going forward as a band united again by doom metal music. We will be working together with Calvin on finishing the new LP which we plan to record later this year.

"The writing of the new LP has been progressing somewhat slower than usual due to our internal problems but despite that we now have around 7 new songs in a very complete fashion, obviously we are now all wondering what Calvin can bring and now can't wait to get back into the studio to find out. The studio we have chosen to use for the majority of the recording is our old haunt Academy Studios. Then we will be back at Futureworks for some finishing off and possibly vocals. Time will tell.

"We would like to thank from the very bottom of all our hearts, all of our supporters old and new for their patience and love, we promise you a continued and very much stronger My Dying Bride in the future."

A shame, though it's not exactly Aaron who's leaving, which of course is the main man of the band. I can't lie though, I never really liked Hamish in the first place.

Good to hear they've stabilized and I'm very curious to hear the new material, even though I fear they might continue with the style of music that's heard on The Manuscript, which is a very predictable style without much originality. A Map of all Our Failures was of course better than For Lies I Sire, but it could've been a lot better still. The heavier songs on there were great (Kneel Till Doomsday, A Tapestry Scorned and Hail Odysseus in particular). While I love their style usually (a nice blend of death doom and gothic metal), I wish they'd become a little less cheesy. The kind of cheese heard on For Lies I Sire is just too much.

Interesting to see a member from the older days return. Man how much I'd love to listen to their old sound translated for the present.

Hamish probably wanted to go back to the band's initial style, but they didn't want to. I suppose he'll focus more on Vallenfyre now and put out what he wanted to do with MDB.

Kind of unexpected news. At the same time, Calvin's return will probably not affect the band's music too much as they already have 7 songs done.
In that respect, I must say, I really respect Andrew, but he were not coming up with many interesting riffs lately. I hope that Calvin will manage to bring some fresh air.
