Is it just me or does Japan's metal scene seem severely lacking in terms of variation. They either try to be Dir En Grey or Children of Bodom, with few exceptions.
Oh well, at least their psych and drone scenes are interesting.

I think that says more about the scope of the Japanese bands currently featured on MS, and the black/death/extreme bias that entails. The Japanese power scene's gone supernova in the last ten years and they've always done pretty well for "flower metal" in general.

I'm in no way limited by our database here, especially when it comes to looking for Japanese metal. Aside from a few black and death metal bands, most of their popular "exports" seem to fall under the DEG/CoB category, or at least that's what my searches lead to.

Ah, fair enough. Harsh vocals are usually such a turn-off for me, I tend to avoid that stuff.

I've found some good stuff YouTubing some of the names on this site, but to be honest, can't say I know of a really good site for Japanese metal specifically. Karlabos might.

Japan's black metal scene is the country's best represented metal genre with really only a handful of other bands dotting the other styles.
