Jesper Strömblad - Elaborates On Why He Left In Flames

Originally Jesper Strömblad cited recovery from alcoholism as the main reason for leaving popular Swedish band In Flames back in 2010. But the guitarist has now announced on his Facebook page while answering questions from fans that the main reason was that he and the rest of the band saw the band heading in different directions. Indeed it would appear that Jesper would've preferred the band to stay a melodic death metal band as opposed to the more alternative metal/rock approach they have adopted over the last decade or so.

Jesper Strömblad wrote: "I posted the other day that you should submit questions for me to answer. Well as 99% is about the same subject I can make some things clear once and for all, for save you the trouble to ask;

- Will I ever return to In Flames? No one never knows what the future brings, but the chances are slim as they embarked on a different musical journey, they have a solid lineup and I'm on a totally different path in life right now. I would never go into details why I quit, but there is always one official story and there is the other...Alcohol is a quite small part of it. That can also answer the next question, what do I think of their new stuff. Listen to The Resistance and that explains a bit of it. We simply went different directions. I need to stand behind and feel inspired with what I do 100%, I owe it to the fans and obviously the band. All respect to In Flames and their new approach, but for me the band was a guitar riff-based melodeath band. And it's not anymore, but still amazing musicianship and I don't think it's wrong. But it's not the vision I had when we started out. But still all respect to them and the huge success, highly deserved! So please, I wish, change the comment from 'come back to IF', to 'welcome Niklas Engelin', who is one of the nicest talented guys, and the one who fill my shoes perfect, and brings back an amazing energy live and personally! So there you have it.

"I do not and will never compromise with my music. I'm on a new path together with the guys in TR who made me want to play again and the good feeling of being a part of a band. Dedication, friendship, genuine passion for the music! Money, fame grammys etc doesn't matter a crap if you don't have you're not committed 100% to it. I also have a solo album coming up, an facebreaking EP and album with The Resistance and some other exciting projects. So... everyone is where they belong... I'm in a band I love. IF do their thing great... all good:) love you all #TTD #soberandrelevant.

Is anyone remotely surprised? Especially considering In Flames dropped what MDM elements they had left after Jesper quit.

True and I am not surprised at all.
IF start to playing a bit shitty since 2004 but since Jesper left IF playing not even shitty but something much worse than shitty.
And there is no more founding band members left in IF....and that is sad.

p.s
It would be right decision for Anders to disband IF and continue with his music experiments with his other band called Passenger http://metalstorm.net/bands/band.php?band_id=5766&bandname=Passenger

Down to earth guy. You can say that he's being honest, and it doesn't take much to believe him.

I could never understand the success In Flames had after Reroute to Remain. I still enjoy that album and also Come Clarity but the rest is very bad in comparison with their oldest works.
Siren Charms shows that the band itself doesn't quite now where to turn...

Those who gave Siren Charms 9 and 10 should be tied to a chair and forced to listen to Lunar Strain / Subterranean and Whoracle for a month straight...

Tho I agree that In Flames Siren Charms is as charming as an anal inspection (no offence meant to people who like that I have to say that this is no surprise. Yet I listened to The Resistance and didn't really like it either

Maybe now Jesper can finally move on and start a new band with melodeath that is better than the current and shitty In Flames.

Wow, some of these comments are worse than what one might see on a YouTube video, and that's saying something. Sure, I'm no fan of In Flames' latest works, but saying Anders should disband (which really, not that bad in hindsight, just more or less a depressing opinion, oh, and Passenger is dead BTW), or people who like their newer stuff should be forcibly bound to a chair and forced to listen to music? Man, some of ya'll seriously need to talk to someone.

In other news: Go Jasper! Thanks for spelling it out for us. More often than not labels hold members back and prevent them from airing out this sort of stuff. Glad to see Jasper laying it out for us. Much respect!

Siren Charms is one of the worst album's i've heard from a big metal act, especially as big as IF. There's nothing wrong with a change of sound, that's not the problem with In Flames' new album. More the problem that their new material is plain boring.

It's been the Anders Friden show since Reroute To Remain. In Flames haven't been a melodic DM band for since the 20th century.

I would say Colony was their last MDM release. That's just my opinion

I rate Clayman MDM, that's just my opinion though.

I love their early MDM albums, some of my all time favourites. But I also love their post clayman music. They didn't get worse, they just changed. In some ways that's awesome and in others it sucks.

Siren Charms is woeful though. Boring instrumentals, boring vocals and uninspired lyrics. I hope this isn't the evolution of a third era of In Flames. The first being MDM, the second being alternative with elements of MDM and the third being whatever the hell SIren Charms is.
