King Diamond - Performs Without Makeup Due To Eye Infection

Besides his range defying falsettos, vocalist King Diamond is famous for his trademark occult black and white makeup with which he performs. A makeup that also got him into legal trouble once. However, this Wednesday, fans got to see a quite different King Diamond on stage. The concert took place on the 8th of July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at The Rave.

King Diamond posted this message on Facebook: "Tonight was the first time ever King Diamond was forced to play a full production show without makeup, due to a severe eye infection. A doctor had, earlier in the day, prescribed medicine and strongly advised against the use of any makeup. Fortunately there was no negative feedback from this, judging by how absolutely insanely amazing the audience responded to our show. It was so good to be back playing for you all!"

You can watch a fan video of the band performing "Come To The Sabbath" at the show below.

I hope his eye heaals quickly and he goes back to wearing the make up since the make up is a huge part of the King Diamond show.

What's the big deal? It's like you imply that his music is less for it without makeup (not that I know, though). A couple of years ago Twisted Sister started playing without make-up and did more than fine at that putting on a great show at Hellfest when I saw them, so much so that it made me think of the band and their music in far more positive way than I did before.

He just said it's a huge part of the show. It doesn't change the music, but part of seeing a band live is the show. I tend to agree since I don't think he meant that the music is less, just that the live shows could miss that special something.

It's the total package. It is more entertaining. For big gigs and the amount of money one pays for that I want a show around it as well and not just four/five men on stage in their daily clothes performing. That's what small club gigs are for, for me.
I want to be entertaained as well.

I understand what you both mean, I just say that the way Marcel worded it, the implication to music being less for the absence of makeup is there. Sure, there are bands I wouldn't go to see if there was no great stage show involved and it implies that I care less for their music. I'm just saying that in general it shouldn't matter and it's bit sad if it does.

It'll be a big deal.

I'm sure fans will be really pissed and bored if 'Knot started performing without masks. They need to pull off the aesthetics when they're on live shows.

Similarly, King Diamond looks stellar if they comes out to on stage with full package. People will more closely connect to it.

I had the chance to roadie for King Diamond/Trouble in 87 for a couple shows on the Abigail/Run to the Light tour. It was just the opposite as this story. The show in Ft. Walton Beach was at a small place called Franco's. As we were unloading and beginning to get things set-up I started wondering when are we going to get these castle pillars (along with the rest of the props) off the Ryder and into the club. I finally asked and was told quite curtly " We're Not!" "The fucking place is to small". Needless to say NONE of the crew or bands were pleased with the promoter for booking such a small venue. I remember the drummer for Trouble just freaking out banging some sort of board on some railings in the back of the building. I wasn't very pleased either as I wanted to see the entire production. I then went and carved my name on one of the pillars so at least I would be part of the Abigail tour forever lol. So it was King in makeup but no stage show. I would gladly swap the two. You can mask not having makeup as seen in the pic with dark glasses and shadow from the top hat.
